Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission systems, including stringing new wire, setting poles, and installing transformers, capacitors, and regulators.
- Perform energized "hot-line" work on live power lines using appropriate rubber gloving and hot stick techniques in compliance with all safety regulations.
- Respond immediately to emergency service calls for power outages caused by storms, accidents, or equipment failure, working in all weather conditions, day or night.
- Operate heavy-duty hydraulic equipment such as digger derricks, bucket trucks, cranes, and trenchers to facilitate construction and repair tasks.
- Climb wooden poles and steel towers to access and work on electrical equipment, requiring a high level of physical fitness and comfort with heights.
- Troubleshoot and identify defects in power lines and equipment, performing diagnostic tests to locate faults and determine the cause of malfunctions.
- Install and replace transformers, switches, fuses, and lightning arrestors to ensure the integrity and proper functioning of the electrical grid.
- Perform underground electrical work, which includes laying conduit, pulling underground cable, and making terminations in vaults, pedestals, and enclosures.
- Read and accurately interpret work orders, blueprints, schematics, and staking sheets to determine the scope and specifications of the job.
- Conduct thorough inspections of electrical systems, equipment, and infrastructure to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Splice, terminate, and connect conductors of various sizes and materials, ensuring all connections are secure and meet industry standards.
- Install, test, and maintain residential and commercial electrical service drops and meter loops.
- Frame and set new utility poles and anchors, ensuring they are properly guyed and secured for stability.
- Perform pole-top and bucket truck rescue maneuvers as part of routine safety training and in the event of a real-world emergency.
- Test circuits and electrical components for continuity, voltage, and current using multimeters, ammeters, and other specialized testing devices.
Secondary Functions
- Mentor and provide on-the-job training for apprentice linemen, sharing knowledge and reinforcing safe work practices.
- Complete and submit all required work orders, job safety analyses (JSAs), timesheets, and material usage reports in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe, clean, and operational condition through daily inspections and preventative maintenance.
- Participate actively in daily job briefings, safety meetings, and training sessions to foster a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
- Secure work sites from public hazards by setting up appropriate signage, traffic cones, and barricades in accordance with traffic control plans.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with crew members, supervisors, dispatch, and occasionally customers to coordinate work and provide status updates.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency in climbing wood poles and steel structures using lineman's climbing gear.
- Competent operation of bucket trucks, digger derricks, and other line construction equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of electrical theory, AC/DC circuits, and principles of power distribution.
- Expertise in both overhead and underground line construction and maintenance techniques.
- Mastery of live-line maintenance procedures, including rubber gloving and hot-sticking.
- Ability to splice and terminate high-voltage cables and conductors.
- Thorough understanding of OSHA regulations and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Skill in reading and interpreting electrical blueprints, schematics, and staking sheets.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Successful completion of a certified Journeyman Lineman Apprenticeship program.
Preferred Education:
- Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Electrical Power Technology or a related technical field.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
3-5+ years of experience as a qualified Journeyman Lineman following the completion of an apprenticeship. A valid Class A CDL is required.

- Experience working on both distribution and transmission systems.
- Prior experience in a leadership or training capacity (e.g., Crew Lead).
- Experience with a variety of utility systems (e.g., urban, rural, overhead, underground).
