Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist Journeyman and Master Electricians in the installation, alteration, and repair of electrical systems, wiring, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Transport, organize, and stage tools, materials, and equipment to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow on the job site.
  • Precisely measure, cut, bend, and thread electrical conduit (EMT, PVC, Rigid) using hand and power tools to create pathways for wiring.
  • Skillfully pull electrical wiring and cables through conduit, raceways, and wall cavities according to project specifications and electrical code.
  • Mount and install electrical components such as outlet boxes, junction boxes, switch assemblies, and lighting fixtures under direct supervision.
  • Perform basic assembly of electrical components, fixtures, and control equipment in preparation for installation by a licensed electrician.
  • Strictly adhere to all company, state, and federal safety regulations (including OSHA standards) to prevent accidents and ensure a secure workplace for everyone.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power tools, including drills, reciprocal saws, wire strippers, and conduit benders, in a safe and effective manner.
  • Assist in the excavation and backfilling of trenches for the installation of underground conduit and direct-burial cable systems.
  • Learn to interpret and work from basic electrical blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams under the guidance of senior electricians.
  • Support senior electricians in troubleshooting electrical circuits and systems to help identify and resolve faults or malfunctions.
  • Prepare and terminate wires, ensuring secure connections to devices, circuit breakers, and panels as directed.
  • Assemble and install various types of raceway systems to protect and route electrical conductors in commercial and industrial settings.
  • Provide hands-on assistance with the setting and wiring of electrical panels, switchgear, and other power distribution equipment.
  • Safely operate and work from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial lifts to access work areas at various heights.

Secondary Functions

  • Proactively identify and report any potential safety hazards or equipment malfunctions to the site supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of tools, equipment, and materials on the job site or in the company vehicle.
  • Perform general site cleanup duties, including sweeping, debris removal, and organizing materials, to maintain a safe and orderly work environment.
  • Operate company vehicles to transport materials, tools, and personnel between the workshop and various job sites as required.
  • Develop a foundational understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building codes through hands-on application and mentorship.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with, or ability to quickly learn, common hand and power tools (e.g., drills, impact drivers, saws, conduit benders, wire strippers).
  • Basic understanding of electrical theory and fundamental safety principles.
  • Ability to read a tape measure accurately and perform basic mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, fractions).
  • Physical stamina and strength to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs and work in physically demanding conditions (climbing, kneeling, stooping).
  • Mechanical aptitude and dexterity for handling and assembling small components.
  • Willingness and ability to be trained on the safe operation of aerial lifts, scissor lifts, and other specialized equipment.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate of completion from a vocational or trade school specializing in electrical technology.
  • Enrollment in or completion of a pre-apprenticeship program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of experience in a construction, manual labor, or related trade environment.

Preferred: 6+ months of direct experience working as an Electrical Helper or in a similar role on a construction site is highly desirable.
