Core Responsibilities
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Construct, install, and maintain overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission lines, including setting poles, stringing conductors, and installing transformers.
- Perform complex troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures to identify faults in the electrical grid and execute timely repairs to restore service during power outages.
- Safely climb wood poles, steel towers, and other structures using approved climbing gear and techniques to access and work on electrical equipment at height.
- Operate specialized heavy machinery, including bucket trucks, digger derricks, cranes, and trenchers, to facilitate construction and maintenance tasks.
- Execute live-line maintenance on energized circuits using appropriate methods, such as hot-sticking and rubber-gloving, while adhering to stringent safety protocols.
- Install, replace, and maintain a wide range of electrical apparatus, including transformers, switches, circuit breakers, capacitors, and voltage regulators.
- Perform underground cable splicing, terminating, and fault locating for both primary and secondary electrical systems in vaults, trenches, and substations.
- Read and interpret complex construction blueprints, work orders, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications to ensure work is completed to engineering standards.
- Conduct comprehensive pre-job briefings (tailboard talks) to review work procedures, identify potential hazards, and establish clear safety measures for the entire crew.
- Respond to emergency call-outs 24/7, often in adverse weather conditions, to restore power and repair system damage caused by storms, accidents, or equipment failure.
- Perform regular inspections and preventative maintenance on the electrical distribution and transmission systems to ensure reliability and prevent future outages.
- Ensure all work performed is in strict compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
- Frame and set utility poles, install anchors, and secure guys and other support structures to ensure the structural integrity of the power line infrastructure.
- Maintain meticulous records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on jobs by completing work orders and other required digital or paper documentation.
- Take a lead role in mentoring and providing on-the-job training for apprentice line workers, fostering a culture of safety, quality, and skill development.
- Maintain all company-issued tools, equipment, and vehicles in a clean, safe, and fully operational condition, performing routine checks and reporting any defects.
- Effectively communicate with system dispatchers, supervisors, and other departments to coordinate work, report progress, and ensure safe grid operations.
- Install and maintain residential and commercial electrical services, including meters and service drops, ensuring proper connections and safety.
- Practice and enforce proper rigging techniques for lifting and moving heavy equipment and materials safely and efficiently on the job site.
- Proactively identify and report unsafe conditions or practices on the job site to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of the crew and public.
- Perform tree trimming and vegetation management in proximity to power lines to maintain safe electrical clearance and prevent outages.
- Execute complex switching and grounding procedures on high-voltage lines and equipment to establish safe, de-energized work zones.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Pole & Structure Climbing: Proficiency in climbing and working on wood poles and steel structures with and without fall arrest systems.
- Heavy Equipment Operation: Expertise in operating bucket trucks, digger derricks, cranes, and other specialized line construction equipment.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL): Must possess and maintain a valid Class A CDL with a clean driving record.
- Electrical Theory & Application: Advanced knowledge of AC/DC electrical theory, circuit diagrams, and power system principles.
- Line Construction & Maintenance: Competency in a full range of overhead and underground line construction, maintenance, and repair techniques.
- High-Voltage Splicing: Proficiency in high-voltage splicing, terminating, and testing of underground and overhead electrical cables.

- First Aid/CPR: Current certification in First Aid and CPR/AED is mandatory.

Educational Background

Typical Experience Range: 4+ years of progressive experience in utility line work post-apprenticeship.
