Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and execute complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layout drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs) to guide the assembly process.
- Perform precise physical layout and mounting of industrial control components such as PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, relays, circuit breakers, and power supplies onto sub-panels and into enclosures.
- Execute point-to-point wiring of all components, ensuring connections are secure, correctly routed, and meet project specifications and industry best practices.
- Cut, strip, crimp, and terminate wires of various gauges using a range of hand tools and automated equipment, ensuring high-quality and durable connections.
- Accurately label all wires, cables, and components according to schematic diagrams to facilitate future service, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Conduct comprehensive quality control checks, including continuity testing, torque verification, and visual inspections, to ensure panels are free of wiring errors and defects.
- Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety standards, including lockout/tagout procedures, and maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues within assembled panels, performing necessary rework or repairs to correct any identified faults with precision.
- Ensure all assembly and wiring work is performed in compliance with relevant electrical codes and standards, particularly UL 508A and NEC.
- Collaborate effectively with electrical engineers and project managers to resolve discrepancies in drawings, clarify technical requirements, and suggest design improvements.
- Drill, tap, and punch enclosures and back panels as needed for mounting components, conduit, and other hardware with a high degree of accuracy.
- Manage and maintain the inventory of components for assigned projects, accurately tracking usage and reporting shortages to the materials department.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the final assembly of control panels, including mounting doors, installing covers, and preparing panels for factory acceptance testing (FAT).
- Participate in and support factory acceptance tests (FAT) with clients and quality assurance teams, demonstrating panel functionality and making on-the-spot adjustments.
- Maintain accurate production records and documentation, including red-lining drawings to reflect as-built changes for final documentation packages.
- Operate light fabrication machinery, such as drill presses, band saws, and grinders, for custom modifications to enclosures and mounting plates.
- Assemble and install complex wire harnesses and cable assemblies according to detailed work instructions and quality standards.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior panel builders or apprentices, sharing knowledge and promoting best practices.
- Assist with the crating and packaging of finished control panels to ensure they are secure and protected during shipment to customer sites.
- Continuously identify and recommend opportunities for process improvements to enhance assembly efficiency, reduce waste, and improve overall product quality.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Schematic Interpretation: Deep proficiency in reading and understanding electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings.
- Component Knowledge: Strong familiarity with industrial control components, including PLCs, VFDs, servo drives, relays, transformers, and circuit protection devices.
- Wiring & Assembly: Expertise in point-to-point wiring, cable management, and proper termination techniques (crimping, soldering).
- Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the use of hand and power tools essential for panel building, such as wire strippers, crimpers, torque wrenches, multimeters, and drills.
- UL 508A / NEC Standards: Solid understanding of industrial control panel standards, especially UL 508A, and general knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform precise mechanical layout, drilling, tapping, and mounting of components within enclosures.
- Electrical Troubleshooting: Competency in using a multimeter to perform continuity tests and diagnose basic wiring and component faults.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or GED.

Typical Experience Range:

- Demonstrable experience building panels for specific industries like manufacturing, water/wastewater, or material handling is a plus.
