Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of electrical systems and components, including motors, transformers, lighting, and power distribution up to 480V 3-phase.
  • Perform advanced diagnostic tests on malfunctioning electrical and electronic equipment using specialized tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, meggers, and thermal imaging cameras to identify root causes.
  • Interpret and work from complex electrical blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to effectively install, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and program Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), primarily Allen-Bradley and Siemens, to ensure automated systems operate as designed.
  • Install, configure, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and servo motor systems to optimize machine performance and energy efficiency.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on all electrical equipment, documenting findings and scheduling necessary repairs to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Ensure all electrical work complies with current National Electrical Code (NEC), local regulations, and internal company safety standards.
  • Run, bend, and install conduit (EMT, Rigid) and pull wire for new equipment installations, system upgrades, and facility expansions.
  • Respond promptly to emergency maintenance requests and equipment breakdowns, working efficiently to restore operations with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Calibrate, repair, and maintain electronic instrumentation and control systems to ensure accurate process monitoring and regulation.
  • Systematically inspect and test electrical systems, circuit breakers, and components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair.
  • Assemble and install new electrical and electronic control panels and components based on engineering designs and specifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering to all lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and other safety protocols without exception.
  • Document all maintenance activities, repairs, and parts usage accurately in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Collaborate with engineers and other maintenance personnel to diagnose and solve complex, cross-functional equipment issues.
  • Advise management on the condition of electrical systems and provide recommendations for upgrades, replacements, or operational improvements.
  • Modify and update machine control software and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) to improve functionality and operator experience.
  • Fabricate necessary parts or components using machine shop tools when required for a specific repair or installation.
  • Participate in the design and review process for new equipment installations, providing technical input from a maintenance perspective.
  • Assist in managing the inventory of critical spare parts, ordering supplies, and ensuring essential components are readily available.

  • Maintain meticulous records of repairs, calibrations, and preventative maintenance for compliance and auditing purposes.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • PLC Troubleshooting: Proficient in diagnosing and programming PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Siemens S7).
  • VFD and Motor Control: Deep knowledge of installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives, servo systems, and AC/DC motors.
  • Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read, understand, and red-line complex electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics and blueprints.
  • Power Distribution: Strong experience with industrial power systems, including 480V/3-Phase, transformers, and switchgear.
  • NEC Compliance: Thorough understanding and practical application of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and other safety standards.
  • Diagnostic Instrumentation: Skilled in using a variety of test equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, meggers, and clamp-on ammeters.
  • Control Systems & Instrumentation: Experience with sensors, transducers, actuators, and other components of industrial control loops.
  • Conduit & Wiring: Competency in bending and installing electrical conduit and performing clean, professional wiring installations.
  • HMI/SCADA: Familiarity with configuring and troubleshooting Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and SCADA systems.
  • Soldering and Component Repair: Ability to perform board-level repairs, including through-hole and surface-mount soldering.
  • Pneumatics & Hydraulics: Foundational knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems as they interface with electrical controls.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a certified Electrical Apprenticeship program or a technical certificate in a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Electrical Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or Industrial Maintenance.

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience as an Electrical Technician.
