Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret and apply blueprints, electrical schematics, single-line diagrams and construction specifications to layout, route and install conduit, cable, raceways, panelboards, transformers and branch circuitry for residential, commercial and industrial projects, ensuring alignment with NEC and local code requirements.
  • Install, wire, and connect electrical equipment including distribution panels, circuit breakers, metering equipment, switchgear, motor control centers (MCC), transformers, lighting systems, receptacles, HVAC power feeds and branch circuits while verifying proper wire sizing, overcurrent protection and grounding.
  • Perform systematic troubleshooting and fault diagnosis for electrical systems using multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers (megger), phase rotation meters and oscilloscopes to isolate shorts, open circuits, overloaded circuits, grounding issues and motor/control failures.
  • Commission, test and startup new electrical systems and equipment (motors, VFDs, PLCs, starters, control panels), execute functional tests, document test results, and perform adjustments to meet performance specifications and project acceptance criteria.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance programs on electrical systems and rotating equipment: inspect connections, test insulation resistance, verify torque on lugs and bus bars, clean/replace filters/fans, perform vibration checks and log maintenance activities for reliability improvement.
  • Install and configure low-voltage systems including fire alarm circuits, security systems, telecom/data cabling (as applicable), grounding and bonding to maintain separation and reduce interference per code and manufacturer instructions.
  • Configure and troubleshoot motor control systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters and related sensors; tune parameters and verify motor protection, short-circuit coordination and thermal overload settings.
  • Perform conduit bending, pulling of wire, splicing and termination using industry-standard techniques; fabricate and install cable trays, ladder racks and supports while maintaining neat work and proper segregation of power and control wiring.
  • Interpret single-line diagrams and protection coordination studies to select, install and set protective devices (fuses, relays, breakers) and coordinate with utilities and engineers for safe energization.
  • Respond to emergency electrical calls and perform rapid root-cause analysis and repairs to restore power, minimize downtime and ensure safe operation of critical equipment while documenting repairs and recommended corrective actions.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate job documentation: work orders, test reports, inspection reports, As-Built drawings, material cut lists and change orders; update project management or CMMS systems to reflect completed work and inventory usage.
  • Maintain compliance with NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements and participate in jobsite safety planning, PPE selection, hot work permits, lockout/tagout procedures, and toolbox talks; immediately mitigate observed hazards.
  • Install, inspect and verify grounding and bonding systems including electrode installations, equipotential bonding and resistance testing to ensure personnel and equipment protection.
  • Coordinate with general contractors, subcontractors, engineers and inspectors to schedule inspections, secure permits, maintain critical path scheduling and deliver milestones on time while proactively communicating delays or material needs.
  • Perform energy-efficiency upgrades and retrofit projects: replace lighting fixtures with LED systems, install occupancy sensors and lighting controls, implement energy monitoring devices and recommend load balancing or power factor correction.
  • Estimate materials, labor hours and equipment needs for tasks; assist in procuring parts, negotiating with vendors and tracking inventory to ensure on-time delivery of job-critical components.
  • Supervise, mentor and train apprentices and less-experienced electricians on safe work practices, code-compliant installations and efficient workmanship; review trainee work and provide constructive feedback.
  • Install and maintain surge protection devices, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and backup generator connections; perform transfer switch testing and synchronize operations per manufacturer and electrical code guidelines.
  • Execute panel upgrades, service changes and meter relocations for residential and commercial customers; coordinate utility company interaction for service disconnects, inspections and re-energizing procedures.
  • Conduct load calculations, voltage drop analysis and short-circuit calculations to ensure system design is within capacity limits and to recommend upgrades where required for code compliance and equipment longevity.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, secure tools and materials, label circuits and panels clearly, and ensure all installations are plumb, level and installed to industry-standard quality.
  • Support commissioning teams for complex projects including integration with building management systems (BMS), PLC control logic checks, and sequence-of-operations verification with cross-disciplinary teams.
  • Follow environmental and hazardous material handling procedures when working with oils, batteries, PCBs or other regulated substances; dispose of waste and recycling per local regulations.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives: suggest process improvements, input into method statements, and apply new technologies or tools that increase safety, efficiency or quality of electrical work.
  • Complete final walkthroughs with clients and inspectors, explain system operation and maintenance needs, hand over operation manuals and warranties, and ensure customer satisfaction with the installation.

Secondary Functions

  • Support project scheduling and provide input on electrical work sequencing to minimize rework and downtime.
  • Assist estimators and project managers by providing field-level insights during bid preparation and value-engineering reviews.
  • Participate in pre-construction site surveys, document site conditions and recommend routing or material changes to optimize installations.
  • Contribute to company safety programs by reporting near-misses, participating in incident investigations and proposing corrective actions.
  • Provide on-call coverage rotation for after-hours emergency repairs and plant outages to ensure business continuity.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local electrical codes; ability to apply code requirements in the field.
  • Proven experience reading and interpreting electrical blueprints, single-line diagrams, schematics and control logic diagrams.
  • Proficient in using electrical test equipment: digital multimeter, clamp meter, insulation resistance tester (megger), earth/ground testers, and phase rotation meters.
  • Skilled at conduit bending, cable pulling, splicing, lugs, connectors and termination techniques for copper and aluminum conductors.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
