Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist Journeyman Electricians with the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, components, and equipment, including motors, transformers, and circuit breakers.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, and install electrical conduit systems, such as EMT, IMC, and rigid conduit, to create pathways for electrical wiring.
  • Pull and terminate wiring and cables through conduit, raceways, and wall cavities, ensuring proper connections and circuit integrity.
  • Install and connect various electrical devices, including outlets, switches, light fixtures, and electrical panels, according to blueprints and specifications.
  • Learn to read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams to understand project layouts and circuit requirements.
  • Utilize a variety of hand and power tools, including wire strippers, crimpers, conduit benders, drills, and saws, in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform basic electrical testing and troubleshooting using multimeters, voltmeters, and ohmmeters to identify and diagnose issues in circuits.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols, including OSHA regulations and the National Electrical Code (NEC), to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and the team.
  • Mount and fasten control panels, distribution boxes, and other electrical enclosures to walls and structures.
  • Assist in the trenching and excavation for underground conduit installation and direct burial cable runs.
  • Learn to identify different types and gauges of wires and cables and understand their specific applications and ampacity ratings.
  • Help with the layout and installation of branch circuits and feeders for power distribution throughout a structure.
  • Participate in the installation of grounding and bonding systems to ensure electrical safety and system reliability.
  • Support senior electricians during system testing and commissioning phases to verify functionality and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of job site safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Cut openings in walls, ceilings, and floors to accommodate conduit, wiring, and electrical boxes.
  • Assist in setting up and maintaining temporary power and lighting solutions on construction sites.
  • Learn to terminate and splice wires and cables, ensuring secure and durable connections using approved methods and devices.
  • Help in the setup of motor control centers and the connection of electrical motors and associated control systems.
  • Participate in daily job briefings and safety meetings to stay informed about project tasks and potential hazards.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by sweeping, removing debris, and properly storing tools and materials.
  • Assist with loading and unloading trucks, and transporting materials, tools, and equipment to and from the worksite.
  • Keep an inventory of parts, supplies, and materials on the company vehicle or in the job site storage container.
  • Complete daily work logs, timecards, and other required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with team members, supervisors, and other trades on the job site.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Basic understanding of electrical theory, circuits, and safety principles.
  • Proficiency in using common hand tools (e.g., screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches) and power tools (e.g., drills, saws).
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and fractions, for measurements and layouts.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong manual dexterity for handling tools and components.
  • Ability to read a tape measure accurately and perform precise measurements.
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to rapidly learn, the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Familiarity with operating testing equipment like multimeters and voltage testers.
  • Ability to learn how to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), climb ladders, and work in physically demanding positions.
  • Experience operating basic construction equipment is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be enrolled in or willing to enroll in a state-approved apprenticeship program.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or diploma from a vocational or technical school specializing in electrical technology.

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years

Preferred:

  • Some prior experience in a construction, labor, or skilled trades environment is highly advantageous but not required. A demonstrable passion for the electrical trade and a strong desire to learn are most important.
