Primary Functions

- Communicate critical or unexpected physiologic findings promptly and clearly to the interpreting neurologist or supervising physician, providing waveform examples and clinical context to expedite diagnostic decision-making.
- Implement and maintain infection control practices including single-use disposables, appropriate cleaning of equipment, sharps disposal, handling of potentially infectious material, and adherence to OSHA and CDC guidelines.
- Apply appropriate stimulation and recording techniques for specialized studies such as late responses (H-reflex, F-waves), repetitive nerve stimulation, blink reflexes, and intraoperative monitoring support when cross-trained.
- Educate patients and families regarding testing expectations, post-procedure care (e.g., minor bleeding or soreness after needle EMG), and answer questions to reduce anxiety and improve cooperative testing.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams—neurology, physical medicine, orthopedics, pain management, and primary care—to coordinate testing schedules, pre-procedure requirements, and follow-up testing or referrals.
- Assist in pre-certification and billing documentation by accurately recording test start/stop times, CPT/HCPCS modifiers where applicable, and clinical indications to support appropriate reimbursement and reduce denials.
- Maintain up-to-date credentials, certifications and continuing education in neurodiagnostic best practices, electrophysiology safety, and the use of new diagnostic technologies through courses, workshops and institutional in-services.
- Participate in chart review and case triage processes to prioritize urgent EMG/EEG requests (e.g., suspected neuromuscular junction disorders, rapidly progressive weakness, status epilepticus) and schedule appropriately for inpatient and outpatient services.
- Support quality improvement by collecting and reporting KPIs (test turnaround time, incomplete tests, artifact rates), participating in morbidity and mortality reviews, and implementing corrective actions to improve diagnostic yield and operational efficiency.

Minimum Education:
