Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute complex functional, performance, and system-level tests on a wide range of electronic circuit boards, modules, and finished products using established procedures.
  • Set up, configure, and operate standard and specialized test equipment, including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, spectrum analyzers, power supplies, and function generators.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and identify the root cause of failures in electronic assemblies down to the component level by interpreting schematics, block diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Perform precise rework and repair on printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA), including fine-pitch surface mount (SMT) and through-hole soldering/desoldering.
  • Meticulously record and document all test results, failure data, and troubleshooting steps in the manufacturing execution system (MES) or quality database.
  • Read, interpret, and work from complex engineering drawings, schematics, assembly drawings, and work instructions to perform testing and validation tasks.
  • Operate and monitor Automated Test Equipment (ATE) systems, executing pre-defined test scripts and analyzing automated reports for anomalies.
  • Conduct environmental stress screening (ESS), including thermal cycling and vibration testing, to ensure product robustness and reliability under various conditions.
  • Perform First Article Inspection (FAI) on new product introductions (NPI) to validate the manufacturing and testing process against design specifications.
  • Collaborate directly with design, manufacturing, and quality engineers to provide detailed feedback on test failures, product testability, and potential design improvements.
  • Generate comprehensive test reports, failure analysis summaries, and yield data for review by engineering and management teams.
  • Maintain and perform basic calibration and verification of test stations, fixtures, and associated equipment to ensure measurement accuracy and consistency.
  • Adhere strictly to all electrostatic discharge (ESD) handling procedures and safety protocols within the test and manufacturing environment.
  • Flash firmware, install drivers, and configure software on units under test as a prerequisite for functional validation.
  • Visually inspect PCBAs for manufacturing defects such as poor solder joints, component placement errors, and physical damage prior to and after testing.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to investigate trends in product failures.
  • Contribute to the organization's continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting enhancements to test procedures, fixtures, and overall workflow.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements by providing practical feedback from the test floor.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team when developing new test software or processes.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of junior technicians on test methodologies, equipment operation, and safety standards.
  • Manage inventory of test components, lab supplies, and equipment, initiating purchase requisitions as needed.
  • Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) meetings to provide technical input on the disposition of non-conforming materials.
  • Assist engineers in the development, validation, and documentation of new test procedures and test fixture designs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Electronic Troubleshooting: Proficient in diagnosing and debugging analog and digital circuits down to the component level.
  • Test Equipment Operation: Hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, digital multimeters (DMMs), logic analyzers, power supplies, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Schematic & Drawing Interpretation: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex electronic schematics, assembly drawings, and component datasheets.
  • Soldering & Rework: Skilled in SMT and through-hole soldering/desoldering techniques for repair and modification of PCBs (IPC certification is a plus).
  • Automated Test Equipment (ATE): Experience operating ATE systems and familiarity with test execution software (e.g., LabVIEW, TestStand, Python scripts).
  • Computer Proficiency: Competent in using Windows/Linux operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel for data logging), and manufacturing databases.
  • ESD Best Practices: Deep understanding of and adherence to electrostatic discharge prevention and control measures.
  • Firmware/Software Installation: Experience with programming/flashing microcontrollers and installing software on embedded systems.
  • RF Testing: Familiarity with radio frequency (RF) test principles and equipment like spectrum analyzers and network analyzers is highly desirable.
  • Data Logging & Analysis: Ability to systematically record test data and perform basic analysis to identify trends and patterns.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED coupled with relevant military training (e.g., avionics, electronics repair) or a Technical Certificate in Electronics.

  • Associate of Science (A.S.) in Electronics Engineering Technology or a related technical field.
