Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, operate, and maintain manual and automated electroplating lines to apply metallic and chemical finishes (e.g., zinc, nickel, chrome, tin, anodize) onto various substrates according to engineering blueprints and work orders.
  • Prepare parts for plating by performing cleaning, degreasing, masking, and racking procedures to ensure proper adhesion and coating uniformity.
  • Monitor and precisely control plating parameters, including temperature, pH, chemical concentrations, current density, and plating time, to achieve specified finish requirements.
  • Perform regular chemical analysis of plating baths using techniques such as titration, pH metering, and atomic absorption spectroscopy to maintain optimal solution chemistry.
  • Make calculated chemical additions to plating and processing tanks to replenish solutions and maintain them within established operating parameters.
  • Conduct first-piece, in-process, and final inspections of plated components using precision measuring instruments like micrometers, calipers, and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) units to verify coating thickness and quality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve plating defects, such as poor adhesion, blistering, pitting, or discoloration, by identifying root causes and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Interpret and follow detailed work instructions, process specifications, and engineering drawings to ensure parts are processed correctly and meet all customer requirements.
  • Handle, store, and dispose of hazardous chemicals and waste materials in strict accordance with company policies, safety protocols, and environmental regulations (EPA, OSHA).
  • Operate and maintain filtration systems, rectifiers, pumps, and other ancillary plating equipment to ensure consistent and reliable line performance.
  • Document all process parameters, chemical additions, production data, and quality control results accurately and consistently in logbooks or digital manufacturing execution systems (MES).
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to support process improvement initiatives, new product introductions (NPI), and the qualification of new plating processes.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on plating tanks, racks, fixtures, and associated equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Assist in the management of chemical and supply inventory, including ordering, receiving, and stocking materials needed for the plating department.
  • Train junior technicians and operators on standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and quality inspection techniques.
  • Participate in continuous improvement events, such as Kaizen and 5S activities, to enhance workplace safety, efficiency, and organization.
  • Operate wastewater treatment systems, ensuring compliance with all local and federal discharge permits and environmental regulations.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory and inspection equipment to ensure the accuracy of measurements and test results.
  • Support the investigation of customer complaints and internal non-conformances related to plated products, providing data and technical insights.
  • Adhere to all company safety procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as respirators, gloves, and chemical-resistant aprons.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Chemical Analysis: Proficiency in wet chemistry techniques, especially titration, for analyzing and maintaining plating bath concentrations.
  • Process Control: Strong ability to monitor and adjust critical plating parameters (e.g., amperage, voltage, temperature) using process control equipment.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using inspection tools such as X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzers, micrometers, calipers, and profilometers.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Hazardous Material Handling: In-depth knowledge of safety protocols for handling, storing, and disposing of acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Mechanical aptitude for performing preventive maintenance and basic repairs on pumps, filters, rectifiers, and tanks.
  • Hull Cell Analysis: Experience conducting and interpreting Hull Cell tests to troubleshoot and optimize plating bath performance.
  • Wastewater Treatment: Familiarity with the operation of industrial wastewater treatment systems to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Substrate Preparation: Expertise in surface preparation techniques including cleaning, acid etching, and masking.
  • Troubleshooting: Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve common plating defects and process inconsistencies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or a technical certificate from a vocational school.
  • Certified Electro-Finisher (CEF) designation is highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience working as a technician in an electroplating, anodizing, or metal finishing environment.

  • 5+ years of experience with a deep understanding of specific plating processes (e.g., electroless nickel, hard chrome, zinc-nickel).
  • Proven track record of troubleshooting complex plating issues, contributing to process improvements, and training other technicians.
  • Experience in a highly regulated industry such as aerospace, medical devices, or automotive is a significant plus.
