Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate electrostatic spray painting and powder coating equipment to apply uniform, high-quality finishes onto various metal, plastic, and composite substrates according to manufacturing specifications.
  • Meticulously prepare surfaces for painting by cleaning, degreasing, sandblasting, sanding, and masking to ensure optimal paint adhesion and prevent defects.
  • Precisely mix paints, primers, catalysts, and thinners to the correct color, viscosity, and consistency as dictated by technical data sheets and work orders.
  • Regulate and adjust paint flow, atomization pressure, and electrostatic voltage on spray guns to achieve the desired thickness and texture without runs, sags, or defects.
  • Perform in-process and final quality inspections on finished parts, utilizing tools like mil thickness gauges, gloss meters, and adhesion tests to ensure compliance with quality standards.
  • Systematically hang parts on conveyor lines or position them on racks in preparation for the painting process and carefully remove them for curing or post-finish assembly.
  • Operate and monitor curing ovens, ensuring parts are baked at the correct temperature and for the specified duration to achieve a durable and fully cured finish.
  • Interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and production work orders to determine specific finishing requirements, including color codes, masking locations, and required film thickness.
  • Troubleshoot and correct common painting issues in real-time, such as orange peel, fish eyes, pinholes, and color mismatches, to minimize the need for rework and wasted materials.
  • Maintain a comprehensive log of paint usage, project details, and quality control results for traceability and process improvement purposes.
  • Set up, program, and operate automated painting systems and robotic arms for high-volume production runs, ensuring consistent and efficient application.
  • Select and apply appropriate primers and sealers based on the substrate material and environmental exposure to enhance corrosion resistance and product lifespan.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all painting equipment, including cleaning spray guns, nozzles, pumps, paint lines, and paint booths to ensure consistent operational readiness.
  • Strictly adhere to all environmental and OSHA safety regulations, including the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials like paints, solvents, and cleaning agents.
  • Consistently wear and maintain all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including full-face respirators, paint suits, safety glasses, and gloves.
  • Assist in managing the inventory of all painting supplies, solvents, and powders, notifying the supervisor of low stock levels to prevent production downtime.
  • Collaborate effectively with welders, fabricators, and assemblers to coordinate workflow and ensure components are ready for the finishing process on schedule.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment within the paint booth and surrounding areas, following 5S or similar lean manufacturing principles.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions on how to enhance paint quality, increase efficiency, and reduce waste.
  • Train and mentor apprentice painters or new team members on proper painting techniques, safety procedures, and equipment operation.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Electrostatic Spray Application: Proficiency in operating and adjusting electrostatic spray guns (wet and powder) for efficient and uniform coating.
  • Surface Preparation: Expertise in techniques like sandblasting, chemical washing, sanding, and masking to prepare diverse substrates.
  • Paint Mixing & Color Matching: Ability to accurately mix multi-component paints and match colors to specification using formulas and visual inspection.
  • Quality Inspection Tools: Skilled in using dry film thickness (DFT) gauges, gloss meters, and performing cross-hatch adhesion tests.
  • Powder Coating Application: Deep knowledge of powder coating principles, application techniques, and curing processes.
  • Blueprint & Work Order Interpretation: Ability to read and understand technical drawings and production documents to determine finishing requirements.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Competence in the daily cleaning, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance of spray guns, pumps, and paint booths.
  • HVLP Spray Systems: Experience with High Volume, Low Pressure (HVLP) spray systems for detailed or specialized applications.
  • Curing Oven Operation: Knowledge of operating and setting parameters for industrial curing and baking ovens.
  • Hazardous Materials Handling: Certified or knowledgeable in the safe handling, storage, and disposal of paints, solvents, and other chemicals (HAZMAT).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
