Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform a full range of complex andrology and embryology procedures, including semen analysis, density gradient sperm preparation for IUI and IVF, oocyte identification and grading from follicular fluid.
  • Execute highly skilled micromanipulation techniques with precision, primarily Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), assisted hatching, and trophectoderm biopsy for Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT).
  • Conduct detailed daily assessments of fertilization and embryo development, meticulously grading and selecting the most viable embryos for uterine transfer, cryopreservation, or genetic testing.
  • Manage all aspects of the cryopreservation program, expertly performing vitrification (freezing) and thawing of oocytes, sperm, and embryos while ensuring optimal post-thaw survival and viability.
  • Maintain the highest standards of quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) within the IVF laboratory, including daily checks, equipment calibration, and monitoring of the controlled lab environment.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and contemporaneous patient data entry and detailed record-keeping in the electronic medical record (EMR) system, strictly adhering to all HIPAA and clinic protocols.
  • Communicate critical laboratory results, embryo development progress, and procedural outcomes effectively and compassionately with physicians, nurses, and directly with patients when required.
  • Uphold and ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards, including those set by CAP, CLIA, SART, and the FDA.
  • Meticulously manage and maintain inventory of laboratory media, reagents, and specialized consumables, ensuring uninterrupted service and cost-effective resource management.
  • Perform rigorous donor gamete and embryo handling, following strict chain of custody protocols to eliminate any possibility of error and ensure absolute sample integrity.
  • Contribute to the development, validation, and implementation of new laboratory technologies, techniques, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to enhance clinical outcomes.
  • Provide on-call and rotational weekend/holiday coverage as part of the lab team to ensure continuous, seven-day-a-week patient care and uninterrupted laboratory operations.
  • Assist in the training, mentorship, and supervision of junior embryologists, andrology technicians, and laboratory assistants, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning.
  • Prepare and handle gametes and embryos for both fresh and frozen embryo transfers (FET), coordinating seamlessly with the clinical team to ensure perfect timing and execution.
  • Adhere to strict aseptic techniques and universal precautions at all times to maintain a sterile environment and prevent any microbial contamination within the ART laboratory.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and document performance for sophisticated laboratory equipment, including incubators, micromanipulators, laser systems, and cryo-storage units.
  • Engage in continuous professional development by attending scientific conferences, workshops, and staying current with peer-reviewed literature to incorporate the latest advancements in ART.
  • Generate, analyze, and present laboratory key performance indicators (KPIs) such as fertilization rates, blastulation rates, and implantation rates to drive continuous quality improvement.
  • Perform testicular sperm extraction (TESE/MESA) specimen processing and preparation, collaborating closely with urologists and the surgical team during procedures.
  • Accurately document all procedural details, microscopic observations, and outcomes in patient charts and laboratory logs, ensuring a complete, transparent, and auditable record for every cycle.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in preparing and validating laboratory data for annual reporting to the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART).
  • Participate in internal and external research projects aimed at improving clinical success rates and advancing the field of reproductive medicine.
  • Contribute to the development and review of patient education materials related to the IVF laboratory process and what to expect.
  • Participate in regular team meetings to discuss complex cases, review laboratory performance, and collaborate on patient care strategies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in a relevant biological or chemical science is required.

Preferred Education:

A Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Embryology, Reproductive Biology, or a closely related life science is highly preferred. Certification as a Technical Supervisor (TS) by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) is a significant asset.
