Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, document, and execute comprehensive EMC/EMI test plans and procedures for new and existing products based on global regulatory requirements (FCC, ISED, CE, VCCI, etc.).
  • Perform a wide range of EMC tests, including radiated and conducted emissions, radiated and conducted immunity, electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transient (EFT), and surge.
  • Operate and maintain sophisticated RF test equipment, including spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, EMI receivers, signal generators, power amplifiers, and antennas.
  • Manage and maintain the anechoic and semi-anechoic chambers, ensuring calibration, and proper functionality for accurate testing.
  • Analyze test data to determine product compliance status, identify non-conformities, and meticulously document findings in formal test reports.
  • Lead root cause analysis efforts for EMC/EMI failures, employing advanced troubleshooting techniques to identify sources of interference at the PCB, component, and system levels.
  • Collaborate directly with hardware, firmware, and mechanical design teams to recommend and validate design modifications, such as filtering, grounding, and shielding, to resolve compliance issues.
  • Review PCB layouts, schematics, and mechanical designs early in the development cycle to provide critical DfC (Design for Compliance) feedback and mitigate potential risks.
  • Create and maintain a library of test procedures, compliance documentation, and technical reports required for regulatory submissions and product certification.
  • Interface with and manage external third-party test laboratories for certification testing, including scheduling, test witnessing, and reviewing final reports.
  • Stay abreast of evolving international EMC standards and regulations, and advise the organization on their impact on new and existing product portfolios.
  • Develop and implement automated test scripts using Python, LabVIEW, or similar languages to improve testing efficiency and repeatability.
  • Design and build custom test fixtures and harnesses required for specific product testing scenarios.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians within the compliance test team.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring compliance testing aligns with critical product development timelines and launch dates.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc RF and signal integrity measurement requests from the hardware design team to aid in their development efforts.
  • Contribute to the organization's long-term compliance strategy, including recommendations for new test equipment and laboratory capability expansion.
  • Collaborate with product management and marketing teams to ensure product specifications and claims align with achieved certifications.
  • Participate in design reviews as the subject matter expert for all matters related to EMC, EMI, and RF compliance.
  • Support factory and production line test development by providing insights into critical EMC-related performance parameters.
  • Assist in investigating and resolving field-reported issues related to electromagnetic interference or susceptibility.
