Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Promptly and professionally answer multi-line 911 and non-emergency telephone calls, quickly determining the nature and priority of the situation.
  • Skillfully obtain essential information from callers who may be highly emotional, distressed, or uncooperative, including location, incident details, and potential hazards.
  • Operate a sophisticated Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to create, update, and manage incident records with speed and exceptional accuracy.
  • Determine the appropriate level of response and dispatch police, fire, and/or EMS units in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Provide critical, pre-arrival and post-dispatch instructions to callers, including life-saving medical guidance (Emergency Medical Dispatch - EMD), while emergency units are en route.
  • Maintain constant radio communication with all assigned field units, monitoring their status, location, and safety at all times.
  • Accurately relay information and instructions between the public, field units, and other public safety agencies.
  • Operate and monitor a variety of complex communication equipment, including radio consoles, digital recording systems, and TDD/TTY devices for the hearing impaired.
  • Utilize geographic information systems (GIS) and mapping software to pinpoint caller locations and identify logistical challenges for responding units.
  • Simultaneously manage multiple active incidents, prioritizing tasks effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Query local, state, and national crime databases (e.g., NCIC/CJIS) to retrieve critical information for law enforcement officers, such as warrants or vehicle registrations.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all sensitive information encountered in the course of duty, adhering to all legal and departmental standards.
  • Create and maintain precise, detailed logs and records of all communications, transmissions, and dispatched events for legal and administrative purposes.
  • Coordinate mutual aid and inter-agency responses with neighboring jurisdictions and support services during large-scale incidents.
  • Monitor alarm systems for police, fire, and medical emergencies, and initiate the appropriate response protocols.
  • Calmly de-escalate situations over the phone, effectively managing hysterical, angry, or suicidal callers to ensure a safe outcome.
  • Testify in court proceedings regarding dispatched calls and actions taken, presenting information clearly and professionally.
  • Perform regular equipment checks on all communications systems to ensure operational readiness and report any malfunctions immediately.
  • Participate in continuous education and training programs to maintain certifications and stay current with evolving public safety protocols.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new dispatchers, providing guidance and support as they develop their skills.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) software.
  • Experience operating multi-line telephone systems and two-way radio consoles.
  • Fast and accurate typing skills, typically 40+ words per minute.
  • Ability to query and interpret information from criminal justice databases (NCIC, CJIS).
  • Competency with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and digital mapping tools.
  • Knowledge of public safety terminology, phonetic alphabet, and 10-codes.
  • Operation of TDD/TTY equipment for communication with the hearing and speech impaired.
  • Certification in Emergency Medical/Fire/Police Dispatch (EMD/EFD/EPD) is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with the structure and operational procedures of police, fire, and EMS agencies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, and drug screening.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • Completion of a certified Public Safety Dispatcher training program.
