Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide immediate, comprehensive medical care to a diverse patient population presenting with a wide spectrum of undifferentiated illnesses and injuries, from minor ailments to critical, life-threatening emergencies.
  • Perform rapid and thorough patient assessments, including detailed history taking and physical examinations, to formulate accurate differential diagnoses.
  • Order, perform, and interpret a variety of diagnostic tests and procedures, including laboratory studies, advanced imaging (CT, MRI, X-ray), and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Develop and implement effective treatment plans, including pharmacological interventions, fluid resuscitation, and other therapeutic measures, while continuously reassessing patient response.
  • Execute a range of life-saving and stabilizing procedures, such as endotracheal intubation, central venous catheter placement, chest tube insertion, lumbar punctures, and fracture/dislocation reductions.
  • Lead resuscitation efforts for critically ill and injured patients, including the management of cardiac arrest, septic shock, and major trauma, adhering to ACLS, PALS, and ATLS protocols.
  • Make timely and appropriate decisions regarding patient disposition, including admission to the hospital, transfer to a higher level of care, or discharge with a safe follow-up plan.
  • Effectively manage and prioritize multiple patients simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced, and often chaotic emergency department environment.
  • Communicate complex medical information clearly and empathetically to patients and their families, ensuring they are informed and involved in the care plan.
  • Collaborate seamlessly with a multidisciplinary team of consulting physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers (APPs), respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and social workers.
  • Provide clear and concise handoffs during shift changes to ensure continuity of care and patient safety.
  • Maintain meticulous and timely documentation of all patient encounters, procedures, and communications within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Stabilize and prepare patients for emergent surgical intervention or transfer to specialized units like the ICU, Cath Lab, or another facility.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, patient safety protocols, and regulatory compliance standards (e.g., EMTALA).
  • Manage acute pain and provide compassionate, evidence-based pain management strategies.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate actively in departmental and hospital-wide quality assurance and performance improvement (QA/PI) initiatives to enhance clinical outcomes and patient safety.
  • Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and "at-the-elbow" teaching for medical students, residents, and advanced practice providers rotating through the emergency department.
  • Contribute to the development and revision of clinical pathways, protocols, and best practices within the department.
  • Serve on hospital committees such as Trauma, Stroke, Sepsis, or Critical Care to improve system-wide care coordination.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements, research, and guidelines in Emergency Medicine through continuous medical education (CME).

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM).
  • Active, unrestricted state medical license and DEA registration.
  • Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
  • Proficiency in a wide range of invasive and non-invasive procedures, including advanced airway management, central line placement, and chest tube thoracostomy.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the use and interpretation of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for diagnostic and procedural guidance.
  • Strong competency in managing poly-trauma, cardiac emergencies, stroke, sepsis, and other critical conditions.
  • Experience and proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Successful completion of an ACGME or AOA-accredited residency program in Emergency Medicine.

Preferred Education:

  • Completion of a fellowship in a subspecialty of Emergency Medicine (e.g., Critical Care, Toxicology, EMS, Ultrasound, Pediatrics).

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-10+ years of post-residency clinical experience. We welcome and provide strong support for new graduates.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of experience working in a high-volume, high-acuity setting, such as a Level I or Level II Trauma Center or a Comprehensive Stroke Center.
  • Prior leadership experience (e.g., Chief Resident, committee chair) is a plus.
