- Perform venipuncture and sample handling for in-house laboratory testing (CBC, biochemistry, blood gas, electrolytes, coagulation profiles), point-of-care diagnostics, and preparing samples for outside laboratory submission.
- Obtain and interpret ECGs, recognize arrhythmias and emergent cardiac changes, and escalate findings to the supervising veterinarian in a time-sensitive manner.
- Prepare, position, and acquire diagnostic imaging (digital radiography, ultrasound) for trauma, thoracic, and abdominal assessments, including contrast studies if applicable.
- Assist veterinarians during emergency surgical procedures and life-saving interventions: intubation, wound debridement, foreign body removal, chest tube placement, and surgical stabilization.
- Initiate and manage oxygen therapy and respiratory support (oxygen cages, flow-by oxygen, mask oxygen, mechanical ventilation support and monitoring where applicable).
- Administer blood transfusions and blood product therapy, including typing/crossmatching assistance, transfusion setup, monitoring for transfusion reactions, and documenting transfusion records.
- Provide comprehensive wound care, bandaging, external coaptation (splints, wraps), and post-trauma nursing, ensuring pain management and infection prevention strategies are followed.
- Conduct continuous patient monitoring (vitals, urine output, neurologic status) through shift changes, maintaining accurate flow sheets and escalation of abnormal parameters to clinicians.
- Educate and counsel owners during stressful emergency visits — delivering updates, treatment options, realistic expectations, and discharge or aftercare instructions with empathy and clarity.
- Maintain meticulously accurate medical records, treatment logs, controlled substance ledgers, and consent forms for all emergency interventions and hospitalizations.
- Participate in case rounds, contribute clinical observations, and make informed recommendations for ongoing nursing care and diagnostic/therapeutic escalation.
- Manage on-call responsibilities and rotating shifts, providing timely triage advice by phone when required and coordinating emergency transfers or referrals.
- Train, mentor, and supervise junior technicians, veterinary assistants, and students, providing practical emergency skills instruction and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Maintain and troubleshoot emergency equipment (oxygen tanks, monitors, ventilators, suction units, defibrillators), ensure calibration and readiness, and coordinate equipment maintenance or replacement.
- Ensure strict biosecurity, infection control, hazardous waste disposal, and compliance with OSHA and veterinary-specific workplace safety regulations during emergency care.
- Participate in quality assurance, morbidity/mortality reviews, and continuous-improvement initiatives to refine emergency protocols, triage criteria, and patient outcomes.
- Support inventory management for emergency medications, disposables, and specialty supplies; order, rotate, and reconcile controlled substances and refrigerated products.

- Participate in hospital continuing education sessions, case reviews, and simulation training to improve team readiness for uncommon emergencies.
- Contribute to metrics tracking (turnaround times, critical care caseload, outcomes) and produce concise shift reports for handovers.
- Coordinate with external specialty hospitals and referral centers to manage transfers, including compiling medical records, diagnostics, and transport arrangements.
- Support research projects or clinical trials involving emergency patient populations by collecting data per study protocols.
- Help with marketing and SEO-friendly content contributions, such as writing client-facing emergency care guides and social media posts that reflect clinic capabilities.
