Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Spearhead comprehensive ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities to identify and quantify energy waste.
  • Analyze building utility data, system operational parameters, and maintenance practices to benchmark performance and pinpoint energy conservation measures (ECMs).
  • Develop sophisticated energy models and simulations for complex building systems using industry-standard software (e.g., eQUEST, EnergyPlus, TRACE) to predict savings.
  • Formulate detailed technical reports that clearly articulate audit findings, recommend specific ECMs, and provide robust financial analysis, including simple payback, ROI, and life-cycle cost.
  • Quantify the projected energy savings (kWh, therms), cost reductions, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions associated with proposed efficiency projects.
  • Advise clients on the technical and financial feasibility of integrating renewable energy solutions such as solar PV, geothermal systems, and battery energy storage.
  • Manage client relationships throughout the project lifecycle, serving as the primary technical point of contact and trusted advisor.
  • Lead the technical aspects of retro-commissioning (RCx) projects, identifying and correcting operational inefficiencies in existing building systems.
  • Analyze Building Automation System (BAS) data, trend logs, and control sequences to recommend and implement low-cost/no-cost operational improvements.
  • Develop measurement and verification (M&V) plans in accordance with IPMVP protocols to accurately track and report on post-implementation energy savings.
  • Guide clients through the complex landscape of utility rebate programs, tax incentives, and government grants, preparing and submitting applications on their behalf.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, design engineers, and contractors during the design and construction phases to ensure energy efficiency principles are embedded in new projects.
  • Conduct investment-grade audits (IGAs) to support the development of multi-million dollar Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) projects.
  • Review technical drawings, equipment submittals, and specifications to ensure alignment with project energy goals and design intent.
  • Develop and deliver compelling presentations, workshops, and training sessions for clients on energy management best practices and strategic energy planning.
  • Stay at the forefront of federal, state, and local energy codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, Title 24) and advise clients on compliance pathways.
  • Evaluate the application of emerging energy technologies, smart building platforms, and IoT solutions to solve client challenges.
  • Provide expert guidance to clients pursuing green building certifications such as LEED, BREEAM, WELL, or Energy Star.
  • Oversee the implementation of energy projects, coordinating with contractors, and performing on-site verification to ensure quality and performance.
  • Develop and maintain complex spreadsheets and databases for energy data tracking, analysis, and reporting across client portfolios.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep expertise in conducting ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits.
  • Proficiency with energy modeling and simulation software (e.g., eQUEST, EnergyPlus, IES VE, TRACE 700).
  • Strong technical understanding of commercial and industrial HVAC, lighting, building envelope, and control systems.
  • Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS) from vendors like Johnson Controls, Siemens, Schneider Electric, or Honeywell.
  • Knowledge of Measurement & Verification (M&V) methodologies, specifically the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for complex data analysis, financial modeling, and creating custom calculation tools.
