Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive on-site energy assessments for a diverse portfolio of residential and commercial properties, adhering to industry best practices and specific program standards.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic equipment, including blower doors, duct leakage testers, combustion analyzers, and infrared cameras, to accurately diagnose issues with the building envelope and mechanical systems.
  • Perform detailed data collection, including taking precise measurements, photographing existing conditions, and documenting equipment specifications for heating, cooling, and ventilation (HVAC) systems.
  • Analyze client utility bills and building operational data to establish baseline energy consumption and identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for savings.
  • Generate detailed, clear, and actionable energy audit reports that summarize findings, outline recommended energy conservation measures (ECMs), and include cost-benefit analyses.
  • Educate homeowners, property managers, and facility staff on building science principles and the financial and environmental benefits of proposed energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Perform post-installation verification and quality assurance inspections to ensure that energy efficiency upgrades are installed correctly and are performing as expected.
  • Develop scopes of work for contractors based on audit findings, providing clear guidance for the implementation of recommended measures like insulation, air sealing, and HVAC upgrades.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in energy efficiency technology, building science research, and diagnostic techniques.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of federal, state, and local energy codes, green building standards (e.g., LEED, ENERGY STAR), and available utility rebate programs.
  • Calculate projected energy savings and return on investment (ROI) for various upgrade scenarios to help clients make informed financial decisions.
  • Inspect and assess the thermal envelope of buildings, identifying insulation deficiencies, air leakage pathways, and thermal bridging using visual inspection and thermography.
  • Evaluate the efficiency and safety of combustion appliances, including furnaces and water heaters, performing tests for carbon monoxide, draft, and spillage.
  • Assess lighting systems for efficiency and recommend cost-effective LED retrofits and control strategies to reduce electricity consumption.
  • Collaborate with builders, architects, and contractors during the design and construction phases to ensure new buildings meet or exceed energy performance targets.
  • Manage a schedule of appointments, ensuring timely arrival, efficient inspection workflow, and prompt delivery of reports to meet client and program deadlines.
  • Enter all field-collected data accurately and completely into energy modeling software or a central database for analysis and program tracking.
  • Address client questions and concerns with professionalism and technical expertise, building trust and fostering long-term relationships.
  • Document and report any non-energy-related health and safety issues discovered during the inspection, such as moisture problems, mold, or ventilation deficiencies.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to trade allies and contractors, helping them understand and properly implement energy efficiency best practices.

  • Building Science Acumen: Strong foundational understanding of heat transfer, air flow dynamics, moisture control, and the "house-as-a-system" concept.
  • Mechanical Systems Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of residential and commercial HVAC systems, water heating, ventilation strategies, and lighting technologies.
