Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive energy audits and site assessments of commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities to identify opportunities for energy savings and efficiency improvements.
  • Analyze complex utility data, billing histories, and consumption patterns to establish energy baselines, track performance metrics, and identify anomalies or waste.
  • Develop, propose, and manage a portfolio of energy conservation measures (ECMs), including detailed technical and financial feasibility studies (ROI, NPV, payback period).
  • Lead the implementation of energy efficiency projects, coordinating with internal teams, external contractors, and engineering firms from design through commissioning.
  • Monitor and verify energy savings for completed projects using industry-standard M&V protocols (e.g., IPMVP) to ensure performance targets are met and accurately reported.
  • Develop and manage the organization's annual energy budget, providing regular forecasting, variance analysis, and reporting to senior leadership.
  • Evaluate and recommend renewable energy solutions, such as solar PV, battery storage, and geothermal systems, including performing site suitability and economic viability assessments.
  • Manage energy procurement strategies in both regulated and deregulated markets, negotiating contracts with utilities and third-party suppliers to optimize costs and mitigate risk.
  • Ensure facility compliance with local, state, and federal energy codes, environmental regulations, and building performance standards (e.g., ASHRAE, Title 24).
  • Create and deliver compelling presentations, technical reports, and business cases to secure funding and executive buy-in for energy and sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee the operation and optimization of Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) to maximize operational efficiency and occupant comfort.
  • Develop and lead employee engagement and awareness campaigns to foster a culture of energy conservation throughout the organization.
  • Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to energy use intensity (EUI), cost savings, carbon emissions reduction, and project timelines.
  • Serve as the primary technical expert and point of contact for all energy-related inquiries, providing guidance and support to facility managers and operational staff.
  • Identify and pursue available grants, tax credits, and utility rebate programs to reduce the capital cost of energy projects and accelerate implementation.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to uncover new insights into energy consumption trends.
  • Contribute to the organization's long-term sustainability and decarbonization strategy and roadmap.

  • Participate in sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and other agile ceremonies within the energy and sustainability team.
  • Review architectural and engineering design documents for new construction and major renovation projects to ensure adherence to energy efficiency best practices.
  • Stay current with emerging energy technologies, market trends, and regulatory changes to inform strategic planning and maintain a competitive advantage.
  • Manage relationships with key vendors, utility account representatives, and energy service companies (ESCOs).

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Energy Auditing & Analysis: Proficiency in performing ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits and analyzing complex utility data sets.
  • Energy Modeling Software: Experience with simulation tools such as eQUEST, EnergyPlus, TRACE 3D Plus, or similar platforms.
  • Financial Analysis: Strong ability to conduct financial modeling, including life-cycle cost analysis, ROI, NPV, and payback calculations for energy projects.
  • Measurement & Verification (M&V): Deep understanding of M&V protocols, particularly IPMVP, to quantify and verify energy savings.
  • Building Automation Systems (BAS): Hands-on knowledge of BAS platforms (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Schneider Electric) for control strategy optimization.
  • HVAC & Lighting Systems: Strong technical knowledge of commercial HVAC, lighting, and control systems and their optimization.
  • Project Management: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple energy projects simultaneously, from scope development to budget, schedule, and final delivery.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with federal and state energy policies, building codes, and voluntary standards like LEED and ENERGY STAR.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of direct experience in energy management, energy engineering, or a related role.
