Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostics on complex mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues across a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel engines.
  • Execute complete engine overhauls and rebuilds, including meticulous disassembly, precise inspection of components for wear, and reassembly to manufacturer specifications.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins INSITE, Cat ET, OEM-specific tools) and electronic testing equipment to accurately identify faults and interpret data trouble codes.
  • Conduct routine and preventative maintenance, such as oil changes, fluid level checks, filter replacements, and system inspections, to maximize engine longevity and prevent future breakdowns.
  • Maintain exceptionally detailed and accurate service records, meticulously documenting all diagnoses, repairs performed, parts utilized, and labor time for each work order.
  • Read and interpret complex technical manuals, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics to perform required maintenance and complex repairs.
  • Ensure all work is performed in strict accordance with company safety protocols, environmental regulations (OSHA, EPA), and industry best practices.
  • Fabricate, modify, and install parts as necessary using welding equipment, lathes, presses, and other machine shop tools to solve unique repair challenges.
  • Respond to and efficiently resolve emergency breakdowns, often in field environments, to minimize operational downtime.
  • Test-drive vehicles or operate equipment post-repair to verify that all repairs are complete and systems are functioning correctly.
  • Communicate effectively with service advisors, managers, and clients to clearly explain diagnoses, recommended repairs, and provide status updates.
  • Manage parts inventory by identifying, sourcing, and ordering necessary components and verifying the quality of all received parts.
  • Calibrate and precisely adjust engine components, fuel systems, and electronic controls to meet stringent manufacturer and performance specifications.
  • Perform Federal and State inspections (such as DOT) and ensure all vehicles and equipment remain in full compliance with all regulations.
  • Disassemble engines and thoroughly inspect critical components like crankshafts, pistons, and cylinders for defects and wear using precision measuring tools like micrometers and gauges.

  • Electronic Diagnostic Tools: Expertise in using OEM diagnostic software (e.g., CAT ET, Cummins INSITE, PACCAR Davie) and multimeters.
  • Engine Overhaul & Rebuilding: Proven ability to perform complete engine rebuilds according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems: Strong understanding of the diagnosis and repair of hydraulic and pneumatic systems associated with engine operation.
  • Electrical System Troubleshooting: Skill in diagnosing and repairing complex wiring, sensor, and electronic control module (ECM) issues.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Basic to intermediate skills in MIG, TIG, or Stick welding for component repair and fabrication.
  • Precision Measuring: Competency in using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and other precision tools for accurate measurement and inspection.
  • Technical Manual Interpretation: Ability to read and comprehend complex schematics, blueprints, and service manuals.
  • ASE Certifications: Possession of or ability to obtain ASE certifications (e.g., T2 Diesel Engines, A1 Engine Repair) is highly desirable.
  • Fuel & Emissions Systems: In-depth knowledge of modern fuel injection systems, after-treatment systems (DPF, SCR), and emissions controls.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-10 years of hands-on experience as an engine mechanic or diesel technician.

  • Verifiable experience in a fleet maintenance, dealership, or independent repair shop environment.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may be required or preferred for roles involving test-driving heavy vehicles.
