Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct in-depth diagnostic procedures on complex engine performance issues, utilizing advanced scan tools, oscilloscopes, lab scopes, and other diagnostic equipment to pinpoint root causes of failure.
  • Perform complete engine teardowns, meticulous inspections, and precise reassemblies according to OEM specifications, ensuring all components meet or exceed tolerance standards.
  • Diagnose and repair intricate issues within modern fuel injection systems, including Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), common rail diesel, and electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems.
  • Execute major engine repairs including, but not limited to, cylinder head and block machining, crankshaft services, and the precise replacement of pistons, rings, and connecting rods.
  • Service and repair forced induction systems, including turbochargers and superchargers, effectively addressing issues such as boost leaks, wastegate malfunctions, and bearing failure.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex engine-related electrical problems, including intermittent sensor failures, wiring harness faults, and ECU/PCM communication errors.
  • Perform timing belt, timing chain, and camshaft replacements with precision, ensuring exact mechanical timing for optimal engine performance, efficiency, and longevity.
  • Analyze engine performance data, vehicle service history, and technical service bulletins (TSBs) to develop the most effective and efficient repair strategies.
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments like micrometers, bore gauges, and dial indicators to verify component specifications, wear patterns, and machining accuracy.
  • Manage and execute complete engine swaps and replacements, including the seamless integration of all related electronic, cooling, and drivetrain systems.
  • Address and rectify complex issues related to engine cooling and lubrication systems, including diagnosing flow restrictions, pressure problems, and overheating causes.
  • Diagnose, service, and repair advanced engine technologies such as Variable Valve Timing (VVT), cylinder deactivation, and hybrid powertrain systems.
  • Document all diagnostic steps, repairs performed, and parts used with meticulous detail on digital repair orders for accurate record-keeping, warranty claims, and customer billing.
  • Communicate complex technical findings, repair processes, and necessary recommendations clearly and effectively to service advisors and customers.
  • Conduct comprehensive final quality control checks and rigorous road tests to verify that all engine repairs have successfully resolved the customer's concerns and meet shop standards.
  • Stay current with the latest automotive technology, engine designs, and repair methodologies by participating in ongoing training and pursuing advanced certifications.
  • Perform welding and light fabrication as necessary for component repair, exhaust system modification, or bracket reinforcement.
  • Diagnose and repair vehicle emission control systems, including EGR valves, catalytic converters, and diesel particulate filters (DPF), ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
  • Provide expert consultation on major engine repair decisions, advising on the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of rebuilding versus replacement.
  • Recondition and rebuild key engine components, such as cylinder heads and connecting rods, to exacting factory specifications in-house.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, strictly adhering to all shop safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Contribute to the shop's knowledge base by mentoring and assisting junior technicians with complex diagnostic challenges.
  • Collaborate with the parts department to ensure correct parts are sourced and ordered in a timely manner for major engine jobs.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss workflow, challenging repairs, and opportunities for process improvement within the service department.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Engine Diagnostics: Mastery of diagnostic theory and use of tools like scan tools, lab scopes, and pressure transducers.
  • Engine Teardown and Rebuild: Proven expertise in complete engine disassembly, inspection, and reassembly to OEM specifications.
  • Gasoline & Diesel Systems: In-depth knowledge of both gasoline (GDI, Port Injection) and diesel (Common Rail, HEUI) engine systems.
  • Electrical System Troubleshooting: Ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams to diagnose and repair electrical faults.
  • Precision Measurement: Proficient in using micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Forced Induction Systems: Strong understanding of turbocharger and supercharger diagnostics and repair.
  • Timing Systems Expertise: Skill in replacing and timing belts, chains, and gears on a wide variety of engine types.
  • ASE Certifications: A full suite of ASE certifications (A1-A8) is highly desired, with a strong preference for L1 (Advanced Engine Performance Specialist).
  • CAN Bus Diagnostics: Ability to diagnose network communication issues between modules.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Basic to intermediate skills in MIG/TIG welding for component repair.
  • Manufacturer-Specific Software: Familiarity with OEM diagnostic software (e.g., Ford IDS, GM GDS2, Toyota Techstream).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Master ASE Certification (A1-A8) plus L1 Advanced Engine Performance.
  • Manufacturer-specific master certifications (e.g., Ford Senior Master Tech, GM World Class Technician).
