Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive diagnostic tests on malfunctioning engines to accurately identify the root cause of issues, utilizing advanced computerized diagnostic equipment (OBD-II, OEM software) and manual testing procedures.
- Disassemble engines with precision and carefully inspect all components for wear, damage, and defects, using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges.
- Execute complete engine overhauls and rebuilds, including block boring, honing, and decking, as well as crank grinding and polishing to meet or exceed manufacturer specifications.
- Repair or replace defective engine parts, including pistons, rings, bearings, valves, camshafts, and crankshafts, ensuring all components are a perfect fit.
- Perform intricate cylinder head repairs, including valve guide and seat replacement, porting, and resurfacing to ensure proper sealing and optimal performance.
- Diagnose, repair, and replace complex timing systems, including timing belts, chains, gears, and tensioners, ensuring precise camshaft and crankshaft synchronization.
- Troubleshoot and repair sophisticated fuel injection systems, for both gasoline and diesel engines, including injectors, high-pressure fuel pumps, and electronic control modules.
- Reassemble engines with meticulous attention to detail, following established technical procedures and applying correct torque specifications for all fasteners to ensure long-term reliability.
- Install reassembled or new engines into vehicles or equipment, proficiently connecting all electrical wiring, cooling systems, fuel lines, and exhaust components.
- Conduct post-repair quality assurance testing, including running the engine to temperature, checking for fluid leaks, and using diagnostic tools to verify all systems are functioning correctly.
- Test-drive vehicles before and after repairs to diagnose problems and confirm that repairs have successfully addressed the customer's concerns.
- Read and interpret complex technical manuals, service bulletins, and wiring diagrams to stay current with modern engine technology and repair methodologies.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain detailed, accurate, and timely records of all diagnostic findings, services performed, parts used, and labor time for each repair order.
- Communicate effectively with service advisors and customers, clearly explaining complex technical issues, outlining repair options, and providing transparent cost estimates.
