Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Create, modify, and maintain detailed technical drawings, schematics, and 2D/3D models using CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit under the supervision of an engineer.
  • Conduct field surveys and site inspections to gather critical data, take precise measurements, and document existing conditions for civil, structural, or environmental projects.
  • Perform routine laboratory and field tests on materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and electronic components, meticulously recording results and reporting any deviations from specifications.
  • Compile, organize, and process complex technical data from tests and surveys, preparing charts, graphs, and summaries to support engineering analysis and decision-making.
  • Set up, calibrate, operate, and perform routine maintenance on a variety of testing, measurement, and data acquisition equipment to ensure operational readiness and accuracy.
  • Draft comprehensive technical reports, project updates, field notes, and presentations to clearly document project progress, test results, and key findings for review by the engineering team.
  • Maintain and update project files, engineering databases, and digital records, ensuring all documentation is organized, current, and readily accessible.
  • Assist in the preparation of project cost estimates, material quantity take-offs, and bid specifications under the guidance of a Project Engineer or Manager.
  • Review design documents, blueprints, and technical specifications to identify potential discrepancies, conflicts, or missing information, flagging them for resolution.
  • Provide on-site construction observation and inspection to monitor progress and verify that work is being performed in accordance with design plans and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot minor technical issues with equipment, systems, or processes by applying basic engineering principles to identify root causes and recommend solutions.
  • Coordinate with vendors, suppliers, and contractors to obtain quotes, track material deliveries, and ensure the timely availability of project resources.
  • Support research and development (R&D) initiatives by building and testing prototypes, conducting controlled experiments, and carefully documenting all procedures and outcomes.
  • Read and interpret complex technical manuals, industry codes (e.g., ASME, ASTM, NEC), and regulatory requirements to support design, compliance, and quality control activities.
  • Assist in preparing and processing permit applications for submission to local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, ensuring all required information is included.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and perform exploratory data analysis to answer specific engineering questions.
  • Assist in the management of engineering-related inventory, including ordering, receiving, and organizing parts, tools, and consumable supplies.
  • Participate actively in project and safety meetings, taking detailed notes and providing updates on assigned tasks.
  • Ensure all work activities strictly comply with company-wide safety protocols, industry best practices, and environmental regulations.
  • Digitize and archive historical paper drawings and project documents into a modern, searchable electronic format.
  • Respond to basic technical inquiries from internal teams, clients, or the public, providing information or directing them to the appropriate engineering personnel.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by suggesting enhancements to workflows, processes, and procedures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CAD Software Proficiency: Experience with 2D/3D drafting software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Civil 3D, or similar platforms.
  • Technical Document Interpretation: Ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering blueprints, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: High proficiency in MS Excel for data analysis and charting, as well as Word and PowerPoint for reporting.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Skill in using measurement tools (calipers, multimeters, gauges) and software to collect, compile, and analyze technical data.
  • Technical Writing: Competency in drafting clear and concise technical reports, field notes, and project documentation.
  • Basic Engineering Principles: Foundational understanding of principles relevant to the specific field (e.g., civil, mechanical, electrical).
  • GIS Software (Bonus): Familiarity with geographic information systems like ArcGIS for mapping and spatial analysis is a plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years in a technical or engineering-support capacity.
