Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, prepare, and deliver engaging and rigorous lesson plans in English Language Arts that align with state standards and district curriculum goals.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom culture that encourages student participation, critical inquiry, and mutual respect.
  • Assess student learning and comprehension through a variety of formative and summative methods, including essays, projects, presentations, and examinations.

  • Teach foundational and advanced concepts of grammar, syntax, rhetoric, and composition to improve students' writing clarity and effectiveness.
  • Integrate educational technology, such as learning management systems (LMS), interactive whiteboards, and digital collaboration tools, to enhance instruction and student engagement.
  • Cultivate students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills through Socratic seminars, structured debates, and collaborative projects.
  • Manage classroom behavior effectively and consistently, implementing school-wide policies to create an orderly and productive learning environment.
  • Prepare students for success on standardized tests (e.g., state assessments, SAT, ACT, AP/IB exams) through targeted instruction and practice.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, grades, and academic progress in the school's information system.
  • Select and utilize a wide range of instructional materials, literary texts, and supplemental resources to enrich the curriculum.
  • Facilitate student growth in public speaking and presentation skills through structured opportunities for oral communication.
  • Encourage a lifelong love of reading by introducing students to diverse authors and genres and supporting independent reading initiatives.

Secondary Functions

  • Communicate proactively and effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and classroom activities through conferences, email, and phone calls.
  • Collaborate with fellow English department members, special education staff, and other faculty to ensure curriculum alignment and support interdisciplinary learning.
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development workshops, and professional learning communities (PLCs) to stay current with best practices in education.
  • Sponsor or advise extracurricular activities, such as the school newspaper, literary magazine, debate club, or writing center.
  • Serve on school or district-level committees, such as curriculum committees, school improvement teams, or hiring committees.
  • Chaperone school events like field trips, dances, and athletic contests to support the broader school community.
  • Provide academic advising and mentorship to a designated group of students, guiding them in academic and personal development.
  • Stay informed about contemporary issues, trends, and research in the field of English education and pedagogy.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of full-time classroom teaching experience at the middle or high school level.

  • Experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or honors-level courses.
  • Experience in a diverse, multicultural school environment.
  • Familiarity with restorative justice practices and social-emotional learning (SEL) frameworks.
