- Prepare parts for engraving by cleaning, fixturing, centering and pre-marking surfaces to maintain repeatability, reduce movement during machining, and ensure consistent surface finish across runs and batches.
- Convert vector artwork, logos and typed text into engraving-ready files using Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, AutoCAD, or CAM software and verify scaling, kerning and stroke widths for legible engraving at intended depths.
- Create and optimize CNC and laser toolpaths, simulate engraving passes in CAM software, and adjust parameters to avoid burn marks, tear-out, or undercuts while maintaining productivity and surface integrity.
- Perform trial runs and prototypes, evaluate test pieces for depth, clarity and dimensional accuracy, and iterate on tooling, feeds and speeds to reach first-time-right production standards.
- Inspect engraved items using calipers, micrometers, magnification, go/no-go gauges and visual systems to ensure engraving depth, alignment, registration and overall quality meet customer specifications and internal QA checklists.
- Repair, restore and re-engrave existing items with worn or damaged marks by matching style, stroke weight and patina to the original engraving for restoration and conservation work, particularly in jewelry and antiques.
- Apply finishing processes after engraving such as polishing, deburring, plating touch-ups, patination, ink filling, anodizing touch-up, or clear coating to protect engraved surfaces and enhance legibility and appearance.
- Maintain accurate production records including machine setup sheets, tooling usage logs, material batch numbers and time logs to support traceability, repeatability and continuous improvement efforts.
- Collaborate with designers, sales, and customer service to clarify specifications, recommend suitable materials and engraving methods, provide lead-time estimates and develop custom solutions for difficult substrates or detailed artwork.
- Troubleshoot engraving issues such as misregistration, inconsistent depth, chipping or discoloration by diagnosing causes—tool wear, incorrect parameters, fixturing issues or artwork problems—and implementing corrective actions.
- Train apprentices and junior engravers on hand engraving techniques, machine operation, safety procedures, tooling care and file preparation to build team capability and maintain workmanship standards.
- Maintain and calibrate measuring instruments, jigs, fixtures, laser optics and machine alignment to ensure repeatable accuracy and reduce scrap and rework across engraving operations.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols including laser safety, dust and fume control, use of PPE, secure fixturing and proper handling of sharp tools and hazardous materials in accordance with OSHA or local workplace safety guidelines.
- Estimate time, labor and materials required for custom engraving jobs, prepare quotes in conjunction with sales, and identify opportunities to reduce costs through tooling optimization or batching similar runs.
- Manage small-batch and one-off custom orders with strong attention to deadlines, prioritizing workflow, and communicating progress or delays to project managers and customers proactively.
- Maintain inventory of common engraving tools, blades, burs, diamond bits, engraving stones and consumables; reorder or request tooling replacements to avoid production interruptions.
- Document standard operating procedures (SOPs), embroidery templates, template libraries and machine parameter sets for common materials and common logos to speed up onboarding and ensure consistent finishes across operators.
- Work cross-functionally with plating, heat treatment and finishing teams to understand post-engraving processes that might affect tolerances or surface appearance and coordinate timing to avoid damage to engraved details.
- Implement and participate in continuous improvement projects aimed at reducing cycle time, improving surface finish, minimizing heat-affected zones and increasing first-pass yield on engraving jobs.
- Support product development by providing manufacturability feedback on design files, suggesting engraving-friendly fonts, minimum line widths and acceptable depth ranges to preserve detail and reduce production risk.
- Maintain high standards of craftsmanship while meeting commercial production rates, balancing hand finish requirements with machine-driven throughput depending on project scope and client expectations.
Secondary Functions
- Schedule regular preventive maintenance and basic repairs for engraving machines, laser optics, exhaust systems and rotary tooling to maximize uptime.
- Assist estimating, order entry and production planning teams with lead times, capacity planning and prioritization of rush engraving jobs.
- Help maintain a clean, safe and organized work area, including proper disposal of metal shavings, dust and chemical wastes from finishing processes.
- Participate in customer meetings and factory tours to explain engraving capabilities, demonstrate sample finishes and collect feedback for continuous service improvement.
- Support inventory management by reporting low-stock tooling or material items and coordinating with purchasing for timely replenishment.
- Keep up-to-date with new engraving technologies, materials and finishing techniques and recommend pilot projects to evaluate potential production benefits.
