Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Environmental Management System (EMS), ensuring its alignment with ISO 14001 standards and driving continuous improvement.
Conduct regular environmental audits, inspections, and site assessments to identify potential risks, non-compliance issues, and opportunities for environmental performance improvement.
Manage all aspects of environmental permitting, including applications, renewals, and modifications, ensuring all operational activities are fully licensed and compliant.
Oversee comprehensive waste management programs, encompassing the classification, segregation, storage, and disposal of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams.
Monitor and analyze key environmental metrics, including air emissions, water discharge quality, energy consumption, and waste generation rates, to track performance against targets.
Prepare and submit timely and accurate environmental reports to regulatory agencies (such as the EPA) and internal stakeholders, ensuring full transparency and compliance.
Lead incident investigation processes for any environmental spills, releases, or non-compliance events, determining root causes and implementing robust corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
Develop and deliver engaging environmental training programs for employees and contractors to raise awareness of their responsibilities and best practices.
Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies, managing inspections, responding to inquiries, and fostering a positive and professional relationship.
Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for new projects, expansions, or changes in operations to evaluate potential effects and propose mitigation strategies.
Manage programs related to water conservation, energy efficiency, and carbon footprint reduction, identifying and implementing cost-effective sustainability projects.
Maintain a comprehensive legal register of all applicable environmental legislation and regulations, ensuring the organization stays current with changes and forthcoming requirements.
Champion sustainability initiatives throughout the organization, collaborating with various departments to integrate green practices into daily business operations.
Develop and manage the emergency response plan for environmental incidents, ensuring resources and trained personnel are in place to respond effectively.
Review and approve contractor environmental plans and monitor their on-site performance to ensure they adhere to company and regulatory standards.
Manage the procurement, handling, and storage of hazardous materials and chemicals, ensuring compliance with Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements.
Coordinate soil and groundwater sampling, analysis, and remediation projects as required to address historical or current contamination issues.
Provide expert environmental advice and technical support to senior management, operational teams, and project managers to inform decision-making.
Develop and manage the environmental budget, including costs for compliance activities, consulting services, and sustainability investments.
Engage with local communities and external stakeholders on environmental issues, representing the company in a professional and responsible manner.
Facilitate management review meetings for the EMS, presenting performance data, audit results, and strategic recommendations for improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Environmental Regulations: In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental laws (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA).
ISO 14001: Proven experience in implementing, auditing, and managing Environmental Management Systems (EMS) based on the ISO 14001 standard.
Regulatory Reporting: Proficiency in preparing and submitting complex environmental reports (e.g., TRI, Tier II, GHG reporting).
Incident Investigation: Skilled in root cause analysis methodologies to investigate and resolve environmental incidents.
Waste Management: Expertise in hazardous and non-hazardous waste classification, handling, and disposal protocols.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.

Preferred Education:

Master’s Degree in Environmental Science, Management, or a related discipline.
Professional certifications such as CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), REP (Registered Environmental Professional), or ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of direct experience in an environmental compliance, EHS, or sustainability role.
