Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive corporate environmental management system (EMS), aligning with frameworks such as ISO 14001, to ensure systematic control of environmental performance.
  • Direct all aspects of environmental compliance, ensuring adherence to all federal, state, and local regulations including, but not limited to, the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), and Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA).
  • Lead the environmental permitting process for new capital projects, facility expansions, and operational modifications, including negotiating permit conditions with regulatory agencies to ensure favorable and operationally feasible terms.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and build strong, professional relationships with regulatory agencies (e.g., EPA, state environmental protection departments, local authorities), leading all inspections, negotiations, and formal communications.
  • Oversee the collection, validation, analysis, and reporting of all environmental data, ensuring the timely and accurate submission of required reports such as TRI (Toxics Release Inventory), Tier II, DMRs (Discharge Monitoring Reports), and greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories.
  • Manage and mentor a team of environmental professionals, scientists, and engineers, fostering a high-performance culture through clear goal-setting, professional development, and resource allocation.
  • Establish and manage the departmental budget, ensuring cost-effective implementation of environmental programs, technologies, and compliance activities while forecasting future capital and operational expenditures.
  • Conduct comprehensive environmental risk assessments, audits, and due diligence for potential mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures to identify liabilities and inform business decisions.
  • Drive the corporate sustainability strategy, setting ambitious goals for waste reduction, water conservation, energy efficiency, and carbon footprint reduction, and publicly reporting progress through sustainability reports (e.g., GRI, SASB).
  • Lead the investigation of all environmental incidents, including spills and non-compliance events; direct root cause analysis and the implementation of robust corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop, oversee, and maintain comprehensive hazardous and non-hazardous waste management programs, from characterization and storage to transportation and disposal, ensuring full compliance and minimizing liability.
  • Proactively monitor, interpret, and communicate potential impacts of pending and new environmental legislation and regulations to senior management and operational teams.
  • Champion a pervasive culture of environmental stewardship and accountability across all levels of the organization through targeted training, communication campaigns, and executive engagement.
  • Direct complex site remediation and contaminated land projects, managing consultants, contractors, and budgets to achieve regulatory closure in a cost-effective and timely manner.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure and report on the effectiveness of environmental and sustainability programs to the executive leadership team and Board of Directors.
  • Oversee and provide technical direction for all air and water quality monitoring programs, ensuring proper methodology, data interpretation, and response to any monitored exceedances.
  • Manage environmental legal matters, including responding to Notices of Violation (NOVs) and enforcement actions, in close collaboration with the corporate legal department.
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including community groups, investors, NGOs, and customers, to transparently communicate the company's environmental performance and initiatives.
  • Direct the development and maintenance of integrated Emergency Response and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans, and lead drills to ensure preparedness.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and lead the implementation of new technologies, processes, and control equipment to enhance environmental performance, reduce operational risks, and improve efficiency.

  • Expert Knowledge of Environmental Regulations: Deep, applied understanding of major federal (EPA, RCRA, CAA, CWA, TSCA, CERCLA) and state-level environmental laws.
  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS): Proven experience developing and managing EMS, particularly based on the ISO 14001 standard.
  • Permitting & Compliance: Extensive experience in obtaining and maintaining complex environmental permits (air, water, waste) and managing compliance reporting.
  • Sustainability & ESG Reporting: Familiarity with key sustainability frameworks such as Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).
