Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive Environmental Management System (EMS), often aligned with ISO 14001 standards, to ensure systematic control over environmental performance.
  • Spearhead the entire environmental permitting process, including the preparation, submission, and negotiation of new and renewal applications for air, water, and waste permits to ensure continuous operational compliance.
  • Act as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies such as the EPA, state environmental departments, and local authorities, managing inspections, responding to inquiries, and negotiating compliance matters.
  • Direct all environmental reporting requirements, ensuring the timely and accurate submission of reports including SARA Title III (Tier II and TRI), greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, and other regulatory filings.
  • Oversee comprehensive waste management programs, including hazardous and non-hazardous waste characterization, storage, transportation, and disposal, ensuring full compliance with RCRA regulations.
  • Manage and continually improve the facility's stormwater pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan, conducting regular inspections and training.
  • Lead environmental incident investigations, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to prevent recurrence.
  • Conduct and manage a schedule of internal and external environmental audits to proactively identify potential risks, compliance gaps, and areas for performance improvement.
  • Develop and deliver engaging environmental training programs for all levels of the organization, from new hire orientation to specialized compliance training for specific operational roles.
  • Champion and drive corporate sustainability goals, identifying and implementing projects related to waste reduction, energy efficiency, water conservation, and pollution prevention.
  • Monitor, analyze, and interpret changes in environmental laws and regulations, assessing their impact on the organization and proactively developing strategies to maintain compliance.
  • Manage a team of environmental professionals, providing mentorship, guidance, and performance management to foster a high-performing and engaged environmental department.
  • Prepare, manage, and track the environmental department's annual budget, ensuring cost-effective solutions for compliance, consulting services, and capital projects.
  • Evaluate the environmental impact of new projects, equipment, and process changes through a formal management of change (MOC) process to ensure compliance from the outset.
  • Oversee site remediation and corrective action projects, coordinating with consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies to achieve closure in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, including Operations, Engineering, and Legal, to integrate environmental considerations into all business decisions.
  • Manage the collection, analysis, and visualization of environmental performance data to track key performance indicators (KPIs) and communicate progress to senior leadership.
  • Serve as the on-site emergency coordinator for environmental incidents, providing technical guidance during spills or releases and ensuring proper response and reporting.
  • Lead community outreach and engagement efforts related to the company's environmental performance and initiatives, building trust and maintaining a positive public image.
  • Review and approve contractor activities on-site to ensure their adherence to the company's stringent environmental policies and procedures.
  • Direct air quality compliance programs, including emissions calculations, monitoring, record-keeping, and reporting in accordance with Title V or other applicable air permits.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to uncover trends in environmental performance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Regulatory Expertise: Deep knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., CAA, CWA, RCRA, CERCLA, EPCRA, TSCA).
  • Environmental Management Systems (EMS): Proficiency in developing and managing ISO 14001 or similar environmental management systems.
  • Permitting & Reporting: Proven experience in preparing and submitting complex environmental permits and regulatory reports (e.g., TRI, Tier II, GHG, DMRs).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.

  • Professional certifications such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Registered Environmental Manager (REM), or Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Direct experience managing interactions and negotiations with state and federal environmental regulatory agencies (e.g., EPA).
