Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform comprehensive diagnostic tests on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components to accurately identify faults and malfunctions.
Conduct routine and preventive maintenance (PM) services on a diverse fleet of heavy and light equipment, including oil changes, lubrication, and filter replacements, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Execute major and minor repairs on a variety of equipment, including but not limited to excavators, bulldozers, loaders, graders, and commercial trucks.
Troubleshoot and repair complex hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including cylinders, valves, pumps, and hoses, ensuring proper pressure and flow.
Utilize advanced diagnostic software and tools (e.g., CAT ET, John Deere Service Advisor) to interface with and troubleshoot electronic control modules (ECMs) and other computer-based systems.
Disassemble, inspect, and reassemble complex machinery components, such as transmissions, final drives, and hydraulic pumps, replacing worn or broken parts as necessary.
Read and interpret technical manuals, electrical schematics, and hydraulic blueprints to understand equipment specifications and determine repair procedures.
Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication tasks using MIG and stick welders to repair or modify equipment frames, buckets, and attachments.
Respond to emergency service calls in the field to diagnose and repair equipment breakdowns, effectively minimizing operational downtime.
Conduct thorough post-repair inspections and functional tests to verify that all issues have been resolved and the equipment is safe for operation.
Troubleshoot and service air brake systems, including ABS, on commercial vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure regulatory compliance and safety.
Repair and maintain powertrain and drivetrain components, including differentials, axles, and clutches.
Install and service auxiliary equipment, such as GPS systems, telematics devices, and specialized attachments.
Perform official DOT inspections on commercial vehicles and trailers, ensuring compliance with all federal and state regulations.

Secondary Functions

Complete detailed service reports, work orders, and parts requisitions accurately and in a timely manner using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
Order necessary parts, supplies, and materials, and assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of commonly used components to ensure efficient repairs.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the shop and in the field, adhering to all company and OSHA safety regulations.
Manage and maintain a service vehicle, ensuring it is well-stocked with appropriate tools and parts and is in safe operating condition.
Provide technical guidance and support to equipment operators regarding proper operation and daily pre-use inspections.
Participate in ongoing factory and internal training to stay current with new equipment technologies and advanced repair techniques.
Assist in the training and mentorship of apprentice mechanics, sharing knowledge and best practices for technical and safety procedures.

Diesel Engine Expertise: In-depth knowledge of diesel engine diagnostics, repair, and complete overhaul.
Advanced Hydraulics: Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing complex open and closed-loop hydraulic systems.
Electrical/Electronic Systems: Strong ability to diagnose and repair 12V/24V electrical systems, including wiring, sensors, and electronic control units (ECUs).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

Associate's Degree or Technical Diploma from a vocational school specializing in Diesel Technology or Heavy Equipment Maintenance.
Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Caterpillar, John Deere, Cummins).
ASE Certifications in relevant areas (e.g., T-Series - Medium/Heavy Truck).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience as an equipment mechanic, diesel technician, or a similar role.

Prior experience in a field service role is highly desirable.
Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a strong plus.
