Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate a pilot/escort vehicle in front of or behind commercial trucks transporting oversize, wide, or heavy loads, ensuring a protective buffer from other traffic.
- Maintain constant and clear radio communication (CB radio) with the truck driver, other escort drivers, and authorities to relay critical information about road hazards, traffic, and upcoming maneuvers.
- Conduct comprehensive pre-trip route surveys to identify potential obstacles, such as low bridges, power lines, narrow passages, road construction, and weight-restricted areas.
- Actively manage and direct traffic at intersections, roundabouts, and tight corners to create a safe passage for the oversize load, preventing accidents and minimizing public disruption.
- Utilize a height pole to accurately measure vertical clearances of overhead obstructions along the route, ensuring the load can pass safely without contact.
- Monitor the movement of the transported load and truck, watching for any signs of shifting, instability, or equipment malfunction and immediately reporting concerns.
- Ensure strict adherence to all state and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, as well as the specific requirements outlined in the oversize load permits for each state traversed.
- Provide advance warning to oncoming traffic and the public about the presence of a slow-moving, wide, or long vehicle to enhance overall road safety.
- Liaise professionally with state troopers, DOT officers, and other law enforcement officials to facilitate smooth passage and inspections at checkpoints or state lines.
- Make real-time, critical decisions to adjust routes or procedures in response to unexpected road closures, accidents, adverse weather, or other unforeseen challenges.
- Navigate the convoy using maps, GPS systems, and route survey notes, providing clear turn-by-turn directions to the truck driver.
- Assist in safely pulling the oversize load off the roadway into designated rest areas or safe havens for overnight stops or required breaks.
- Document and report any incidents, accidents, or near-misses that occur during the trip, providing detailed accounts for safety and insurance purposes.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle, including lights, signs, flags, tires, and communication equipment, to ensure it is in proper working order.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times, acting as a representative of the company to clients, officials, and the general public.
Secondary Functions
