Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design and implement sophisticated and customized estate plans for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals and families, including drafting wills, revocable living trusts, and irrevocable trusts (such as ILITs, SLATs, GRATs, and QPRTs).
- Provide comprehensive counsel to clients on the complexities of federal and state estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax laws, developing strategies to minimize tax liabilities and maximize wealth preservation.
- Manage all phases of trust and estate administration, guiding fiduciaries (executors and trustees) through the probate process, asset collection and valuation, and the fulfillment of their legal duties.
- Advise clients on advanced wealth transfer techniques, including business succession planning, charitable giving strategies (e.g., establishing private foundations, charitable remainder trusts), and family limited partnerships.
- Conduct thorough reviews of client asset titling and beneficiary designations for life insurance, retirement accounts, and other assets to ensure alignment with their overall estate planning objectives.
- Represent individual and corporate fiduciaries, as well as beneficiaries, in trust and estate administration matters, including probate court proceedings, accountings, and dispute resolution.
- Prepare and file federal and state estate tax returns (Form 706) and gift tax returns (Form 709), ensuring accuracy and compliance with all applicable regulations.
- Develop and execute asset protection strategies, advising clients on how to structure their holdings to shield them from potential future creditors and legal challenges.
- Draft and negotiate prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, integrating them seamlessly with clients' broader estate and financial plans.
- Perform modifications of irrevocable trusts, utilizing methods such as decanting, non-judicial settlement agreements, and judicial reformation to adapt to changing laws or family circumstances.
- Counsel clients on establishing guardianships and conservatorships for minors and incapacitated adults, and represent clients in related court proceedings.
- Maintain direct and proactive communication with clients, their financial advisors, accountants, and other professional partners to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to their wealth management.
- Conduct in-depth legal research on novel and complex issues in trust and estate law, tax regulations, and property law to provide cutting-edge advice and solutions.
- Actively engage in business development efforts, including networking, participating in professional organizations, and cultivating relationships with referral sources to contribute to the firm's growth.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants within the practice group, fostering their professional development and ensuring high-quality work product.
- Manage client engagements from inception to completion, including overseeing billing, managing retainers, and ensuring client satisfaction throughout the legal process.
- Advise on the formation and governance of family-owned business entities, integrating succession planning to ensure smooth leadership and ownership transitions.
- Stay consistently informed about legislative and regulatory changes at the federal and state levels that impact estate planning, trusts, and taxation, and proactively communicate these changes to clients.
- Handle the administration of complex estates involving unique assets such as closely-held business interests, fine art collections, and international property.
- Facilitate family meetings to explain estate plans, discuss fiduciary roles, and foster clear communication and understanding among family members to prevent future conflicts.
Secondary Functions
- Author articles, blog posts, and client alerts on relevant estate planning topics to enhance the firm's thought leadership and online presence.
- Participate in and present at legal seminars, webinars, and community events to educate the public and other professionals on trusts and estates matters.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active bar license and in good standing in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Deep expertise in federal and state estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax laws.
- Demonstrated proficiency in drafting a wide range of complex legal documents, including wills, revocable trusts, and sophisticated irrevocable trusts.
- Significant experience with the entire probate and trust administration process, from initial filing to final distribution.
- Proficiency with legal research platforms such as Westlaw and LexisNexis.
