Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, document, and maintain organizational ethical frameworks, principles, and decision-making rubrics that operationalize values (e.g., fairness, transparency, autonomy) across product development, data practices, and governance structures.
  • Lead and facilitate ethical reviews and algorithmic impact assessments for new and evolving products, producing clear written findings, prioritized recommendations, and remediation roadmaps for engineering and product teams.
  • Conduct cross-functional stakeholder consultations (legal, engineering, product, design, user research) to translate ethical concerns into actionable product requirements, mitigations, and acceptance criteria.
  • Design and run ethics governance processes, including ethics review boards, escalation pathways for high-risk decisions, and executive reporting mechanisms that integrate into product lifecycle and risk management.
  • Perform proactive risk identification and mitigation for algorithmic bias, unequal outcomes, privacy intrusions, and other societal harms; quantify risk where possible and recommend measurable guardrails.
  • Create and deliver training programs, workshops, and playbooks for engineers, product managers, and leaders to build organizational capacity in ethical reasoning, bias mitigation, and responsible deployment practices.
  • Monitor relevant regulatory landscapes, legal decisions, and standards (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, AI regulatory proposals) and advise on compliance implications and policy positioning for products and corporate practices.
  • Lead or commission internal and third-party audits of models, datasets, and decision systems to validate fairness, robustness, and privacy claims; oversee corrective action and verification processes.
  • Partner with data scientists and ML engineers to co-design evaluation metrics for fairness, explainability, and robustness; translate technical metrics into stakeholder-facing assurances and documentation.
  • Author clear, accessible ethics documentation for product teams and external stakeholders, including ethics assessments, impact statements, model cards, data sheets, and transparency reports.
  • Provide real-time advisory support during design sprints and product scoping to ensure ethical tradeoffs are considered and documented before major technical investments.
  • Establish and maintain incident response playbooks for ethical breaches or harms (e.g., discriminatory outcomes, privacy violations), lead post-incident reviews, and drive lessons-learned into policy updates.
  • Engage external stakeholders — civil society, academic researchers, regulators, and impacted communities — to surface perspectives, perform participatory impact assessments, and build trust through transparent engagement.
  • Lead research projects that combine normative ethical analysis and empirical methods (qualitative interviews, audits, quantitative fairness testing) to inform organizational policy and product choices.
  • Translate complex technical and ethical analyses into executive-level briefings, clear recommendations, and prioritized implementation plans that balance risk, impact, and business objectives.
  • Drive procurement and vendor assessment processes for third-party models and datasets, conducting ethical risk assessments and vendor audits to ensure alignment with organizational standards.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
