Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Perform manual excavation for footings, trenches, and utility installations using shovels, picks, and digging bars to achieve precise depths and alignments.
Assist heavy equipment operators by acting as a spotter, using clear hand signals and verbal communication to guide earthmoving and material placement safely and accurately.
Install, position, and remove critical safety systems, such as trench boxes and hydraulic shoring, to ensure a secure working environment in strict compliance with OSHA regulations.
Prepare construction sites for excavation by clearing and grubbing vegetation, rocks, and other debris to establish a safe and accessible work area.
Lay, connect, and bed various types of underground utilities, including storm drain, sewer, and water lines, ensuring proper grade, alignment, and secure jointing.
Backfill and compact excavated areas to specified densities using hand-operated or walk-behind equipment like plate tampers and "jumping jack" rammers.
Operate a diverse range of hand and power tools, including jackhammers, pavement breakers, concrete saws, and portable pumps, to support site work activities.
Set up, operate, and read laser levels and grade rods to establish and verify elevations for trenches, foundations, and pipe inverts.
Load, unload, and strategically transport construction materials, tools, and equipment around the job site, either manually or with the assistance of small machinery.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site by consistently clearing away debris, scrap materials, and potential hazards.
Control traffic flow around the work zone by setting up signs, cones, and barricades, and performing flagging duties as needed to ensure public and worker safety.
Perform fine grading of soil and aggregate materials using rakes and shovels to prepare sub-grades for concrete slabs, paving, or final landscaping.
Identify and safely expose existing underground utilities using careful hand-digging techniques (potholing) to prevent costly and dangerous damages.
Support survey crews by holding grade rods steady, marking stakes, and clearing lines of sight to facilitate accurate site layout.

Secondary Functions

Operate small equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, or dump trailers under supervision for minor tasks.
Assist in mixing, pouring, and spreading concrete for small applications like footings, thrust blocks, or patch repairs.
Perform routine maintenance and cleaning on all hand tools, power tools, and small equipment to ensure they remain in safe and effective working condition.
Operate dewatering pumps to remove water from trenches and excavated areas, maintaining a dry and workable environment.
Secure material loads on trucks and trailers using straps, chains, and binders, ensuring safe and compliant transportation of materials and equipment.
Adhere rigorously to all company safety protocols and government regulations, including the consistent and correct use of all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Communicate proactively with foremen, operators, and fellow laborers to coordinate tasks, report progress, and immediately flag any potential safety issues or on-site challenges.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Trenching & Shoring: In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards and practical experience in safely setting up and removing trench safety systems.
Hand & Power Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of shovels, rakes, jackhammers, plate compactors, concrete saws, and other common construction tools.
Pipe Laying: Demonstrated ability to properly install, connect, and bed sewer, water, and storm drain pipes to specified grades and alignments.
Grade Checking: Competence in using laser levels, builder's levels, and grade rods to shoot, verify, and maintain elevations and slopes.
Site Preparation: Experience in clearing, grubbing, and performing manual grading to prepare land for subsequent construction phases.
Blueprint & Stake Reading: Ability to interpret basic construction blueprints, survey stakes, and grade markings to understand layout and excavation requirements.

Physical Stamina & Strength: Capable of performing strenuous manual labor for 8-10 hours per day in various adverse weather conditions, and able to lift 50-75 lbs repeatedly.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.

Preferred Education:

Certificate from a vocational or trade school in construction technology or a related field.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of relevant experience.
