Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and proficiently operate various models of hydraulic excavators to perform tasks such as digging, grading, backfilling, and moving materials on construction sites.
  • Execute precise excavation for building foundations, footings, and utility trenches (water, sewer, electrical), ensuring strict adherence to grade stakes, laser levels, and engineering plans.
  • Perform fine grading and sloping of earth to achieve specified contours and elevations for roads, building pads, and drainage systems with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Efficiently load dump trucks and other hauling equipment with excavated materials like soil, rock, and debris, optimizing cycle times while ensuring load stability and safety.
  • Interpret and work from construction blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes to accurately position and execute excavation tasks without constant supervision.
  • Communicate effectively with ground personnel, spotters, and other equipment operators using hand signals and radio communication to ensure a safe and coordinated work environment.
  • Expertly dig trenches of varying depths and widths for pipelines and utilities, followed by careful backfilling and compaction of materials to required specifications.
  • Skillfully maneuver the excavator in congested and confined spaces, demonstrating exceptional spatial awareness to avoid collisions with structures, personnel, and other equipment.
  • Utilize on-board GPS and grade control systems (like Trimble or Topcon) to perform complex excavation and grading tasks with high precision, reducing the need for manual staking.
  • Conduct thorough pre-operational and post-operational inspections of the equipment, checking fluid levels, hydraulic systems, and attachments, and documenting findings.
  • Proactively identify potential on-site hazards, such as underground utilities, overhead power lines, and unstable ground conditions, and take appropriate measures to mitigate all risks.
  • Uphold a rigorous commitment to safety by adhering to all company, OSHA, and site-specific safety regulations and procedures at all times.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine and minor maintenance on the equipment, such as greasing fittings, cleaning tracks, and checking fluid levels, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Utilize various attachments, such as hydraulic breakers, thumbs, and compaction wheels, to perform specialized tasks like demolition, material handling, and soil compaction.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and overall condition of the excavator, ensuring the cab and exterior are free of debris to promote safe operation and a professional site appearance.
  • Assist ground crews with the safe installation and removal of trench boxes, shoring, and other protective systems in deep excavations.
  • Keep a detailed daily log of equipment hours, operational activities, and fuel consumption for project tracking and maintenance scheduling.
  • Contribute to overall project success by assisting with general site labor tasks during equipment downtime, demonstrating a team-oriented work ethic.
  • Properly secure the equipment at the end of the shift, following all site-specific shutdown and security procedures to prevent unauthorized use or damage.
  • Perform controlled demolition of structures, pavements, and other obstacles, carefully sorting and loading debris for removal and recycling.
  • Maintain productivity and safe operating standards while working in diverse and often challenging weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
