Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete setup, calibration, and operation of single and twin-screw extrusion lines according to detailed work orders and production schedules.
  • Interpret complex technical blueprints, process sheets, and specification documents to ensure product dimensions, materials, and quality standards are met.
  • Continuously monitor and adjust machine parameters, including temperature, line speed, pressure, and material flow, to maintain process stability and product consistency.
  • Conduct first-piece, in-process, and final quality inspections using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and tape measures to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Proactively identify, diagnose, and troubleshoot process deviations, equipment malfunctions, and quality defects to minimize downtime and scrap.
  • Safely perform material handling duties, including loading hoppers with resins and additives, and ensuring proper drying and blending of materials.
  • Perform routine operator-level preventative maintenance, such as cleaning dies, screws, and barrels, and assisting maintenance personnel with more complex repairs.
  • Accurately complete all required production documentation, including run sheets, quality logs, data entry, and downtime reports, ensuring data integrity.
  • Strictly adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and general housekeeping.
  • Execute and document die changes, tooling adjustments, and downstream equipment setup efficiently to facilitate smooth production changeovers.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by applying 5S principles and other lean manufacturing methodologies.
  • Monitor the performance of downstream equipment, such as pullers, cutters, winders, and packaging systems, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Effectively communicate with shift supervisors, quality assurance personnel, and maintenance teams regarding production status, quality issues, and equipment needs.
  • Package, label, and stage finished products according to customer specifications and internal handling procedures.
  • Accurately weigh, record, and report all scrap material generated during setup, production, and shutdown to support inventory and cost control efforts.
  • Operate forklifts or other material handling equipment to transport raw materials, tooling, and finished goods as required.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing valuable feedback and suggestions for process, safety, and quality enhancements.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new or less experienced operators, sharing knowledge of best practices and standard operating procedures.
  • Manage the extrusion line shutdown process, ensuring equipment is properly cleaned, cleared, and prepared for the next production run.
  • Identify and report any non-conforming products or materials to the Quality department and assist in segregation and root cause analysis.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the maintenance department with scheduled preventative maintenance tasks and more involved equipment repairs.
  • Participate in team meetings and continuous improvement events (Kaizen) to help optimize workflow and reduce waste.
  • Contribute to inventory accuracy by assisting with cycle counts of raw materials and finished goods.
  • Support the implementation of new products or process trials on the extrusion line, providing critical operator feedback.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Extrusion Machine Operation: Proven ability to set up, operate, and troubleshoot single or twin-screw extruders.
  • Quality Control Inspection: Proficient in using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other measurement tools to ensure parts meet specifications.
    -Technical Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, work orders, and manufacturing process sheets.
  • Mechanical Aptitude & Troubleshooting: Strong ability to diagnose and resolve common process and equipment issues in a timely manner.
  • Basic Machine Maintenance: Experience performing routine preventative maintenance, tooling changes, and equipment cleaning.
  • Material Handling: Knowledge of different plastic resins and additives, and experience with material blending and drying systems. Forklift certification is a plus.
  • Mathematical Skills: Competency in basic math, including fractions and decimals, for measurements and calculations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical certificate or associate degree in a manufacturing-related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a manufacturing role, with direct experience as a machine operator.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience specifically operating plastic extrusion machinery in a production environment.
