Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, calibrate, and operate single or twin-screw extrusion machines according to detailed work orders, blueprints, and production specifications.
  • Perform complete line start-ups, shutdowns, and changeovers efficiently, including die changes, screw cleaning, and downstream equipment setup.
  • Continuously monitor machine parameters, such as temperatures, pressures, line speed, and material feed rates, making precise adjustments to maintain product quality and consistency.
  • Conduct first-piece, in-process, and final quality inspections using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and pin gauges to ensure product dimensions are within tolerance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common processing issues, such as material surging, dimensional variations, surface defects, and equipment malfunctions, to minimize downtime and scrap.
  • Accurately document all production activities, including machine settings, material usage, scrap rates, and quality control data on production logs and computer systems.
  • Manage the handling and loading of raw materials, including polymers, resins, and color concentrates, into hoppers and feeders.
  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping in the work area, adhering to 5S principles to ensure a safe, clean, and organized environment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on extrusion equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, and inspection of key components.
  • Interpret and work from complex technical drawings, process sheets, and specifications to produce custom profiles, tubing, or sheet products.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to diagnose and address complex mechanical or electrical issues with the extrusion line.
  • Operate downstream equipment, including pullers, cutters, saws, winders, and packaging machinery, in coordination with the extruder output.
  • Ensure all safety protocols and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), are strictly followed during operation and maintenance activities.
  • Weigh, label, and package finished products according to customer requirements and prepare them for shipping or inventory.
  • Monitor raw material inventory levels at the machine and communicate replenishment needs to the material handling team.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality.
  • Train new operators or helpers on standard operating procedures, safety practices, and quality standards.
  • Perform color changes and line purges effectively to minimize transition scrap and ensure color consistency.
  • Visually inspect products for aesthetic defects such as streaks, gels, contamination, or surface imperfections.
  • Operate forklifts or other material handling equipment to move raw materials and finished goods as needed.
  • Actively participate in team meetings to discuss production goals, challenges, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in root cause analysis for production defects and contribute to the implementation of effective corrective actions.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives, such as 5S and Kaizen events, to enhance operational excellence.
  • Collaborate closely with the Quality Control department to ensure all products consistently meet or exceed customer specifications.
  • Provide constructive feedback and practical suggestions for process improvements to team leads, engineers, and supervisors.
