Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Spearhead the research, development, and sourcing of innovative and commercially viable fabrics in alignment with design concepts, seasonal themes, and brand-specific quality standards.
- Manage the end-to-end fabric development process, from initial concept and sourcing at mills to bulk production approval, ensuring all timeline milestones are met.
- Conduct rigorous physical and chemical testing on all incoming fabric samples and bulk production to ensure they meet stringent performance, quality, and safety standards (e.g., colorfastness, shrinkage, pilling, tensile strength).
- Establish, maintain, and rigorously enforce fabric quality assurance protocols and performance standards across the entire supply chain, working closely with mills and vendors.
- Analyze and meticulously interpret lab test reports, making critical decisions on fabric approval or rejection and clearly communicating corrective actions to suppliers.
- Collaborate proactively with Design and Product Development teams, providing technical guidance on fabric selection, suitability, and potential limitations for proposed garment constructions.
- Systematically evaluate and approve lab dips, strike-offs, and bulk fabric submissions for color, pattern, and hand-feel, ensuring consistency from development to production.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for fabric-related inquiries and troubleshooting, providing expert solutions to both internal teams (Design, Production) and external partners (Mills, Factories).
- Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with a global network of fabric mills, suppliers, and testing laboratories to drive innovation and ensure reliable sourcing.
- Drive the brand's sustainability goals by researching, vetting, and integrating eco-friendly materials, certified fibers (e.g., GOTS, recycled polyester, BCI), and sustainable finishing processes.
- Create and manage a comprehensive and organized physical and digital fabric library, ensuring all technical specifications, pricing, and supplier information are accurately recorded.
- Negotiate fabric costing and lead times with suppliers to achieve target price points and production deadlines without compromising on quality or performance.
- Investigate and resolve any fabric-related quality issues that arise during bulk production or from customer feedback, implementing preventative measures to avoid future occurrences.
- Travel to international trade shows, fabric mills, and factories to source new materials, oversee production trials, and conduct quality audits.
- Develop and maintain detailed technical specification sheets for all approved fabrics, ensuring clarity and accuracy for all supply chain partners.
videotapes - Manage the risk assessment process for all new and core fabrics, identifying potential issues with performance, production, or compliance early in the development cycle.
- Educate and update cross-functional teams on new textile technologies, market trends, and innovations in sustainable materials.
- Oversee the fabric validation process, ensuring all materials are commercially viable and can be successfully manufactured at scale within our factory base.
- Ensure all fabrics and materials adhere to global chemical compliance and restricted substance list (RSL) regulations, such as REACH and CPSIA.
- Champion the use of 3D material virtualization by working with suppliers to obtain digital fabric files (UXF, SBF) to support digital product creation initiatives.
- Maintain and track the fabric development-to-costing ratios, ensuring the adopted fabric lineup aligns with a healthy product margin architecture.
Secondary Functions
- Contribute to the development and refinement of the organization's long-term material strategy and sustainability roadmap.
- Assist in mentoring and training junior team members, such as Fabric Assistants or interns, on testing protocols and development processes.
- Manage and maintain the library of approved fabric care instructions, ensuring accuracy for product labeling.
- Participate in fit sessions to provide expert input on how fabric properties like drape, stretch, and recovery will impact the garment's final fit and appearance.
