Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods, utilizing your knowledge of product design, materials, fabrication processes, tooling, and production equipment.
  • Design, model, and implement robust tooling, jigs, and fixtures to increase production efficiency, enhance part quality, and ensure operator safety.
  • Lead Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews, providing critical feedback to the design engineering team to optimize for cost, scalability, and quality.
  • Author and maintain comprehensive manufacturing process documentation, including work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and process control plans.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex fabrication issues on the production floor in real-time, performing root cause analysis (RCA) and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing principles (e.g., Kaizen, 5S, Value Stream Mapping) to reduce waste, minimize cycle time, and lower production costs.
  • Manage the technical aspects of new product introductions (NPI), ensuring a smooth transition from prototype development to full-scale production.
  • Qualify and validate new manufacturing equipment and processes, including conducting process capability studies (Cpk, Ppk) and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to establish in-process inspection criteria, test methods, and quality standards for fabricated components and assemblies.
  • Interface with external vendors and suppliers to source raw materials, components, and outsourced fabrication services, ensuring they meet technical specifications and quality requirements.
  • Define and implement welding procedures (WPS), ensuring compliance with industry standards (e.g., AWS, ASME) and qualifying welders and processes as needed.
  • Create and manage CNC programs for various fabrication equipment, including lasers, plasma cutters, press brakes, and mills, optimizing for material usage and machine time.
  • Analyze production data, metrics, and KPIs to identify trends, bottlenecks, and opportunities for process optimization and report findings to management.
  • Lead capital equipment acquisition projects, from defining specifications and evaluating options to overseeing installation and commissioning.
  • Provide hands-on training and technical support to production personnel on new processes, equipment operation, and quality standards.
  • Champion a culture of safety by identifying potential hazards, participating in safety audits, and integrating ergonomic considerations into process and tool design.
  • Conduct material and process experiments to evaluate new technologies and fabrication techniques that could provide a competitive advantage.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications, including a deep understanding and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Manage project timelines, resources, and budgets for various fabrication-related engineering projects, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Develop and execute process validation protocols (IQ/OQ/PQ) for critical manufacturing steps to ensure consistent and reliable output.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for all matters related to metal fabrication, including forming, cutting, joining, and finishing processes.

Secondary Functions

  • Engage with the supply chain team to mitigate risks related to material availability and supplier performance.
  • Champion and enforce safety protocols and best practices on the fabrication floor and in work cell design.
  • Collaborate with design and R&D teams to rapidly build and iterate on prototypes using various fabrication methods.
  • Support the maintenance team in troubleshooting and repairing critical fabrication equipment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CAD/CAM Software: High proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX) and CAM software for CNC programming.
  • GD&T: Expert-level understanding and practical application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
  • Welding & Joining Processes: In-depth knowledge of various welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Laser, Resistance) and other joining methods.
  • Metal Fabrication Processes: Hands-on expertise in sheet metal forming, CNC machining, press brake operation, laser/plasma cutting, and finishing.
  • Lean Manufacturing & Six Sigma: Proven ability to apply continuous improvement methodologies (Green or Black Belt preferred).
  • Tool & Fixture Design: Demonstrated experience designing effective jigs, fixtures, and tooling for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Proficiency with problem-solving tools such as 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, and FMEA.
  • Process Validation: Experience with Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ).
  • CNC Programming: Ability to read, write, and troubleshoot G-code and M-code for various CNC machines.
  • Data Analysis: Competency in using statistical tools (e.g., Minitab, JMP) and software like Excel for process data analysis.
  • Material Science: Strong understanding of the properties, behavior, and selection of various metals and engineering materials.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in an engineering discipline.

  • Professional certifications such as Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.
