Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, work orders, and production schedules to determine job specifications and requirements.
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate a variety of fabrication machines, including CNC press brakes, laser cutters, plasma cutters, shears, and turret punches.
  • Select and install appropriate tooling, dies, and fixtures required for specific manufacturing jobs, ensuring correct alignment and configuration.
  • Load and unload raw materials (e.g., sheet metal, plates, structural steel) onto machines manually or using overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Monitor machine operations closely to detect any malfunctions, out-of-tolerance conditions, or deviations from specifications, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process quality inspections using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, protractors, and tape measures.
  • Verify that finished parts and components conform to all dimensional and quality standards outlined in the blueprints and work instructions.
  • Adjust machine settings, including cutting speed, feed rate, and pressure, to optimize performance and achieve desired part quality.
  • Deburr, grind, and finish machined parts to remove sharp edges and prepare them for subsequent production stages like welding or painting.
  • Accurately document production data, including part counts, cycle times, and scrap rates, using manufacturing execution systems (MES) or manual logs.
  • Stack, mark, and transport finished components to their designated areas for assembly or shipping, ensuring proper handling to prevent damage.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and efficiency to meet or exceed established production targets and deadlines.
  • Read and understand G-Code and M-Code for CNC machinery, with the ability to perform minor edits to programs at the controller.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve basic operational and material issues to minimize production interruptions and maintain workflow.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on machinery, such as cleaning, lubricating, and inspecting parts, to ensure long-term operational integrity.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and 5S initiatives to enhance safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new or less-experienced machine operators on equipment operation and safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with engineers, programmers, and quality personnel to resolve manufacturing challenges and improve production processes.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by adhering to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Manage inventory of raw materials and consumables at the workstation, notifying supervisors of any shortages.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint Reading: Deep understanding of technical drawings, schematics, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Machine Operation: Proficiency in operating fabrication equipment such as CNC press brakes, laser cutters, punch presses, and shears.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other inspection tools to verify part conformity.
  • Machine Setup & Tooling: Ability to select, install, and calibrate tooling, dies, and fixtures for various jobs.
  • CNC Controls: Familiarity with CNC controllers (e.g., Fanuc, Haas, Amada) and the ability to perform basic program edits.
  • Shop Math: Strong mathematical skills for calculating dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements.
  • Material Handling: Experience safely operating forklifts, overhead cranes, or other material handling equipment.
  • Basic Maintenance: Competence in performing routine preventative maintenance and minor machine adjustments.
  • Metal Properties: Knowledge of different metal types (steel, aluminum, stainless) and their characteristics during fabrication.
  • Welding (Bonus): Basic MIG or TIG welding skills are highly advantageous.
