Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and coordinate all fabrication department activities, including production scheduling, resource allocation, and personnel management, to meet or exceed production targets and deadlines.
  • Develop, implement, and manage the departmental budget, actively monitoring expenditures and implementing cost-control measures to ensure financial objectives are met.
  • Uphold and enforce stringent safety protocols and company policies, fostering a world-class safety culture through regular training, audits, and immediate corrective actions to maintain a zero-incident workplace.
  • Champion and drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, 5S, and Kaizen methodologies to optimize workflow, reduce waste, and enhance overall operational efficiency.
  • Oversee the comprehensive maintenance program for all fabrication equipment and machinery, scheduling preventative maintenance and coordinating timely repairs to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
  • Manage and mentor a diverse team of supervisors, leads, welders, fabricators, and machine operators, providing clear direction, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure the highest standards of product quality are maintained throughout the fabrication process, from raw material inspection to final product sign-off, by working closely with the Quality Assurance team.
  • Analyze production data, performance metrics, and KPIs to generate insightful reports for senior management, identifying trends, and recommending strategic adjustments.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Project Management, and Sales teams to review technical drawings, provide input on manufacturability, and ensure seamless project execution.
  • Manage inventory levels of raw materials, consumables, and finished goods to support production schedules without incurring excess holding costs.
  • Lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding process for all fabrication department personnel, ensuring the team is adequately staffed with skilled and motivated individuals.
  • Resolve complex production issues and operational bottlenecks with a sense of urgency, applying root cause analysis to implement effective and lasting solutions.
  • Plan and oversee facility layout and capital equipment projects, including the evaluation, justification, and installation of new machinery and technology to enhance capabilities.
  • Maintain a deep, hands-on understanding of all fabrication processes, including welding (MIG, TIG, Stick), CNC cutting (laser, plasma), forming (press brake), machining, and assembly.
  • Develop and execute short-term and long-term strategic plans for the fabrication department that align with the company's overall business objectives.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all fabrication-related matters, effectively communicating status updates, challenges, and successes to all stakeholders.
  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical specifications, and schematics to guide the production team accurately.
  • Lead daily production meetings to set clear priorities, communicate goals, and address any immediate operational challenges.
  • Drive a culture of accountability and ownership within the team, empowering employees to take pride in their work and contribute to departmental success.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards, codes (e.g., AWS, AISC), and environmental regulations.
  • Evaluate and manage relationships with external vendors and suppliers for materials and subcontracted services to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Fabrication Knowledge: Expert understanding of various welding techniques (MIG, TIG, SAW), metal forming, CNC machining, laser/plasma cutting, and complex assembly.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: High-level proficiency in reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
  • Lean Manufacturing & Six Sigma: Proven ability to implement and lead continuous improvement methodologies (Kaizen, 5S, Value Stream Mapping) to optimize production.
  • ERP/MRP Systems: Hands-on experience with manufacturing resource planning software for scheduling, inventory control, and production tracking.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering or a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with an operations focus.
