Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Plan, schedule and execute crop planting, cultivation, and harvesting operations, including seed selection, planting depth and spacing, crop rotation, and harvest scheduling to maximize yield and crop quality while minimizing pest and disease pressure.
  • Operate, calibrate and maintain tractors, combines, planters, sprayers and other heavy farm equipment safely and efficiently, performing routine pre-operation checks and preventive maintenance to reduce downtime.
  • Design, install and manage irrigation systems (drip, sprinkler, pivot), monitor soil moisture and water usage, and implement water-conservation practices to optimize irrigation efficiency and crop water uptake.
  • Monitor crops for signs of pests, diseases and nutrient deficiencies; apply integrated pest management (IPM) tactics, targeted pesticide/herbicide/fungicide applications when necessary, and maintain application records in compliance with label and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage soil fertility programs through soil sampling, interpretation of lab results, application of fertilizer and soil amendments, and implementation of cover cropping and other regenerative practices to improve soil health and long-term productivity.
  • Oversee livestock feeding, breeding, birthing and health care routines for cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry or other species on the farm, coordinating vaccination schedules, nutrition plans and veterinary care to maintain herd health and production goals.
  • Supervise, train, schedule and mentor seasonal and permanent farm staff, delegating tasks, enforcing safety procedures, documenting performance and ensuring tasks are completed on time and to quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate operational records including seed and input purchases, fertilizer and pesticide applications, equipment repairs, harvest yields, livestock inventories and financial transactions to support traceability, compliance and farm budgeting.
  • Plan and execute harvest operations, coordinating labor, transport and packing logistics, ensuring produce is harvested at optimal maturity, post-harvest handled properly to maintain shelf life, and delivered to buyers or storage facilities on schedule.
  • Implement and monitor animal welfare practices, biosecurity protocols and housing management, ensuring compliance with industry standards and minimizing infectious disease risks.
  • Develop and manage farm budgets, track income and expenses, forecast seasonal cash flow, and identify cost-saving opportunities while preparing financial reports for owners, lenders or grantors.
  • Negotiate and manage supplier and buyer relationships, coordinate procurement of inputs (seed, feed, fuel, parts) and secure market channels for crops and livestock including direct sales, CSA programs, wholesale buyers and auctions.
  • Operate small-scale processing and value-add equipment (e.g., milk handling, grain drying, on-farm packing lines), ensuring food safety, sanitation and HACCP compliance where applicable.
  • Perform on-farm troubleshooting and repairs for engines, hydraulics, electrical systems and mechanical components; coordinate with external mechanics or service technicians for complex repairs and warranty work.
  • Implement and document sustainability and conservation initiatives such as nutrient management plans, pollinator habitat creation, erosion control measures and participation in environmental incentive programs.
  • Ensure workplace safety by conducting risk assessments, maintaining safety equipment (PPE, fire extinguishers), delivering toolbox talks, and maintaining compliance with OSHA, local and industry-specific safety regulations.
  • Use GPS, auto-steer, and precision agriculture tools to map fields, plan variable-rate applications and analyze yield data to optimize input usage and increase overall productivity.
  • Coordinate and execute crop rotation and succession planting plans to manage pest cycles, improve soil structure and maintain long-term farm resilience.
  • Participate in regulatory inspections, organic certification audits, or commodity program reporting, preparing and presenting necessary documentation and corrective actions to auditors.
  • Manage on-farm seed saving, propagation, and nursery operations where applicable, including greenhouse or transplanter operations and propagation scheduling for season extension.
  • Support business development by analyzing market trends, recommending crop diversification, exploring value-added product opportunities, and preparing proposals for grants or financing to expand operations.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and secure farm facilities, outbuildings, storage sheds and fencing, and schedule routine infrastructure improvements to protect assets and livestock.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with direct-to-consumer sales operations including farmers markets, CSA distribution, farm store sales, and online order fulfillment to grow on-farm revenue streams.
  • Support farm record digitization and software adoption (farm management apps, accounting software, GPS field maps) to streamline operations and improve decision-making.
  • Coordinate with agronomists, extension agents and supply chain partners to pilot new crop varieties, test soil amendments, and scale successful trials across acreage.
  • Participate in community outreach, farm tours, school programs and educational workshops to build brand awareness and customer relationships.
  • Help prepare applications and documentation for agricultural grants, conservation programs and insurance claims, working with advisors to secure funding and risk mitigation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or on-the-job experience acceptable.

Preferred Education: Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Animal Science, Horticulture, Agricultural Business, or related field.
