Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and execute seasonal and annual buying strategies for designated categories that align with the company's financial targets, brand aesthetic, and customer demographic.
  • Analyze comprehensive sales data, key performance indicators (KPIs), sell-through rates, and market trends to identify growth opportunities, risks, and inform future assortment decisions.
  • Manage the Open-to-Buy (OTB) process meticulously, ensuring optimal inventory levels, maximizing turnover, and achieving planned margin, sales, and inventory goals.
  • Source, identify, and onboard new domestic and international vendors while cultivating and strengthening relationships with the existing supplier base to ensure a competitive and innovative product mix.
  • Conduct rigorous market research and competitive analysis, attending trade shows, market weeks, and vendor appointments to stay ahead of fashion trends, new materials, and emerging brands.
  • Negotiate all aspects of vendor agreements, including pricing, payment terms, delivery schedules, co-op marketing funds, and exclusivity rights to secure the best possible advantage for the business.
  • Partner closely with the planning and allocation teams to develop detailed assortment plans, manage product flow, and strategize initial buy quantities and replenishment models.
  • Collaborate with product development and design teams on private label collections, providing input on style direction, material selection, and target costs to create unique, brand-right products.
  • Present seasonal buying strategies, assortment plans, and business review findings to senior leadership, clearly articulating the vision and financial justification for the collection.
  • Oversee the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept and purchase order (PO) creation through to delivery, in-season performance management, and end-of-season markdown strategy.
  • Develop and mentor junior buying team members, such as Assistant Buyers and Merchandise Assistants, fostering their growth in negotiation, analysis, and market awareness.
  • Partner with the marketing and visual merchandising teams to develop compelling product stories and ensure the seasonal vision is effectively communicated across all channels, including e-commerce and physical stores.
  • Continuously monitor and react to in-season sales performance, making strategic decisions on re-orders, cancellations, and promotional activities to maximize profitability.
  • Maintain an exceptional level of product knowledge and expertise within your assigned categories, acting as the go-to authority for all cross-functional partners.
  • Resolve complex vendor-related issues, including quality control problems, shipping discrepancies, and compliance matters, ensuring minimal disruption to the business.
  • Create and manage detailed assortment sheets and buy plans, ensuring data accuracy for all product attributes, costs, and retail prices.
  • Conduct regular store visits and engage with the e-commerce site to gain firsthand insights into product performance, customer feedback, and the competitive landscape.
  • Prepare and deliver weekly, monthly, and quarterly business reports that provide a clear analysis of category performance against plan.
  • Champion new initiatives and process improvements within the buying department to enhance efficiency and drive better results.
  • Manage sample procurement and tracking process for photoshoots, marketing needs, and internal assortment reviews.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to uncover new business insights.
  • Contribute to the organization's broader merchandising and data strategy roadmap.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Retail Math & Financial Acumen: Deep understanding of key retail metrics including margin, turn, IMU, GMROI, and sell-through.
  • Open-to-Buy (OTB) Management: Proven ability to manage and reconcile a complex OTB budget.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel: High proficiency in pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, complex formulas, and data modeling.
  • Assortment Planning: Expertise in creating balanced and strategic assortments by attribute, brand, and price point.
  • Vendor Negotiation: Demonstrable experience in negotiating costs, terms, and delivery with a wide range of suppliers.
  • Product Lifecycle Management (PLM): Experience using PLM systems for product development and data management.
