Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop and curate seasonal color palettes for multiple product categories, ensuring they align with brand identity, market trends, and a cohesive design vision.
- Oversee the entire lab dip, strike-off, and bulk fabric approval process, providing clear, concise, and timely comments to domestic and international vendors.
- Establish and maintain a master physical and digital color library, managing all brand color standards and ensuring proper organization and accessibility.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Design, Merchandising, and Technical Design teams to understand color needs and ensure the final product matches the creative intent.
- Utilize a spectrophotometer and light box to critically evaluate color submissions against physical standards, making data-driven approval or rejection decisions.
- Research, identify, and forecast emerging color trends by analyzing runway shows, market intelligence, trade publications, and competitor activity.
- Create and distribute physical and digital color standard cards to suppliers, ensuring all partners are working from the correct, calibrated information.
- Grant final approval on bulk fabric production lots, ensuring color consistency across all dye lots and preventing deviations in the finished garment.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex color consistency and achievability issues across a wide variety of fabrications, including knits, wovens, synthetics, and natural fibers.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for mills and suppliers regarding all color-related matters, building strong partnerships and effectively communicating feedback.
- Manage and meticulously update all color-related data, comments, and approval statuses within the company’s Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
- Advise the Design team on the technical feasibility and commercial viability of specific colors on designated materials early in the development process.
- Initiate the development of new custom color standards, managing the process from initial concept to a fully approved, reproducible standard.
- Attend and provide critical feedback during print and pattern strike-off reviews to ensure all colors within a design are accurate and harmonious.
- Maintain detailed and organized records of all color development stages, including submissions, comments, and final approvals for future reference and analysis.
- Partner with the production team to manage color development calendars and ensure all key milestones are met to support on-time deliveries.
- Evaluate the colorfastness, crocking, and other performance attributes related to the dyeing process to ensure the product meets quality requirements.
- Drive the naming convention and coding process for all seasonal and core colors, ensuring consistency across all systems and communications.
- Regularly calibrate and maintain all color-viewing equipment, including light boxes, to ensure a consistent and controlled evaluation environment.
- Provide expert guidance and training to junior team members and cross-functional partners on color theory, evaluation techniques, and best practices.
Secondary Functions
- Support the raw materials team in evaluating new fabrications for their dyeing and finishing capabilities.
- Assist in reviewing and approving color on non-textile components such as trims, buttons, and zippers to ensure a cohesive final product.
- Participate in sustainability initiatives by researching and promoting the use of eco-friendly dyes and less water-intensive dyeing processes.
- Contribute to post-season analysis meetings by providing insights on color performance, vendor capabilities, and opportunities for process improvement.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Superior visual acuity and color sense, with a mandatory ability to pass the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test.
- Expert proficiency in fundamental color theory, the Munsell color system, and the CIELAB color space.
- Hands-on experience operating spectrophotometers and interpreting spectral data for precise color matching and quality control.
- High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator) for creating digital color palettes and communicating visual feedback.
- Strong working knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, such as Centric, FlexPLM, or an equivalent.
- In-depth technical knowledge of different dye classes, dyeing methods (e.g., piece, garment, yarn-dye), and finishing techniques.
- Comprehensive understanding of various textile substrates and how their properties affect color uptake and appearance.
- Familiarity with industry color standard systems, including Pantone (TCX/TPG), Color Solutions International (CSI), and Archroma.
⚫️ Strong command of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, for tracking, reporting, and analyzing color development data. - Proven experience in managing the end-to-end lab dip, strike-off, and bulk fabric color approval workflow.
