As a Fashion Maker, you are the architectural heart of our design process. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret designer sketches and technical flats to create first patterns from scratch, utilizing both manual (flat pattern) and digital (CAD) methods.
  • Drape new designs on a form to develop patterns for complex, asymmetrical, or innovative silhouettes.
  • Operate a variety of industrial sewing machines (e.g., single needle, overlock, coverstitch, buttonhole) to construct high-quality, factory-ready samples and prototypes.
  • Lead and participate in fit sessions with designers and technical teams, providing expert feedback on fit, construction, and potential production issues.
  • Execute precise fit corrections and pattern alterations based on feedback from fittings, ensuring the designer's vision is maintained.
  • Develop and refine complete tech packs for approved styles, including detailed construction notes, sewing instructions, and bills of materials (BOM).
  • Collaborate closely with the Design team throughout the entire development cycle, from initial concept to final sample approval.
  • Engineer patterns for optimal fabric utilization and efficient manufacturing without compromising the design aesthetic.
  • Research, test, and implement new and innovative garment construction techniques to elevate product quality and uniqueness.
  • Manage the cutting and preparation of all sample fabrics and trims, ensuring accuracy and attention to material properties.
  • Create detailed block patterns and maintain a digital and physical library of core patterns for the brand.
  • Perform pattern grading across a full-size range, ensuring consistent fit and proportion for production.
  • Maintain the organization and operational readiness of the sample room, including machine maintenance and supply inventory.
  • Ensure all samples meet rigorous quality control standards before being presented or sent to showrooms.
  • Translate complex design concepts into tangible garments, solving intricate construction puzzles with creative solutions.
  • Provide accurate raw material yields for costing purposes based on finalized sample patterns.
  • Work within a fast-paced, deadline-driven calendar to deliver all samples on time for key milestone meetings.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and guide junior pattern makers, interns, or assistant sample makers, sharing knowledge and best practices.
  • Liaise with fabric and trim suppliers to request materials needed for sampling and prototype development.
  • Assist the production team in communicating complex construction details to overseas or domestic factories.
  • Contribute to creative and technical discussions during collection planning and design review meetings.
  • Document and archive all pattern and sample development stages for future reference and continuity.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert Pattern Making: Mastery of both manual flat pattern making and digital pattern making using software such as Gerber, Lectra, or similar CAD systems.
  • Advanced Garment Construction: Proven expertise in sewing a wide range of garments and fabric types with an impeccable finish.
  • Draping Proficiency: Strong ability to drape fabric on a dress form to create innovative and well-fitting designs.
  • Industrial Machine Operation: Full proficiency with industrial sewing machines, including single needle, serger/overlock, and coverstitch.
  • Pattern Grading: Solid understanding and practical experience in grading patterns across multiple sizes.
  • Technical Specification: Ability to create clear, detailed, and accurate technical packages (tech packs) for factory use.
  • Fabric Knowledge: Deep understanding of different textiles, their properties, and how they behave during cutting, sewing, and wear.
  • 3D Fashion Design Software: Experience with or a strong aptitude for learning 3D design software like Clo3D or VStitcher is a significant plus.
  • Fit Analysis: A trained eye for identifying and correcting fit issues on a live model or dress form.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate's Degree or a certificate from a vocational/technical school in Pattern Making, Fashion Design, or a related discipline, OR an equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree (BA/BFA) in Fashion Design, Apparel Manufacturing, or Pattern Technology.
