Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead and conduct comprehensive fit sessions on live models or dress forms, meticulously assessing garment balance, drape, and comfort to provide clear, actionable feedback for pattern and construction adjustments.
- Develop, manage, and maintain highly detailed technical packages (tech packs) from initial concept through to production, including precise measurement specifications, construction details, bills of materials (BOM), and visual callouts.
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for overseas factories and vendors, communicating daily to resolve issues, clarify specifications, and ensure brand standards are understood and executed flawlessly.
- Analyze and approve all stages of product samples (proto, fit, size set, pre-production, and top of production), ensuring they meet all fit, quality, and construction requirements before authorizing production.
- Establish and apply consistent grade rules across all sizes for a given style, ensuring proportional fit and maintaining design integrity throughout the entire size range.
- Collaborate closely with the design team during the initial design phase to provide technical guidance on construction feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and material suitability.
- Troubleshoot and solve complex production and quality control issues in real-time, working with factories to find efficient solutions that do not compromise the product's integrity or delivery timeline.
- Establish and uphold stringent quality and construction standards for the brand, documenting these requirements to ensure consistency across all manufacturing partners.
- Conduct thorough competitor analysis by evaluating the fit, construction, and quality of comparable products in the market to inform and elevate our own standards.
- Manage and maintain the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system, ensuring all technical data, sample comments, and approval statuses are accurate and up-to-date.
- Create and refine base block patterns and fit standards for core product categories to streamline the development process and ensure a consistent brand fit.
- Evaluate and approve bulk production materials, including lab dips, strike-offs, and trim submissions, to ensure they match approved standards for color, quality, and performance.
- Research and propose new and innovative garment construction techniques, finishing processes, and technologies to enhance product quality and efficiency.
Secondary Functions
- Support the product development and sourcing teams by providing technical evaluations of potential new factories and suppliers.
- Partner with the Quality Assurance team to investigate and resolve customer returns or complaints related to fit, performance, or quality.
- Mentor and train junior technical designers or interns, providing guidance on best practices for fitting, spec development, and factory communication.
- Create detailed technical sketches and digital illustrations using Adobe Illustrator to clearly communicate complex construction details to vendors.
- Manage and document a comprehensive library of approved block patterns, trims, and construction standards for team-wide reference.
- Visit domestic and international factories as needed to oversee production launches, conduct on-site quality control audits, and build stronger vendor relationships.
- Organize and manage wear-testing programs for new products or materials, gathering and analyzing feedback to validate garment performance and durability.
- Contribute to pre-costing and cost engineering efforts by suggesting alternative construction methods or materials that can achieve the design intent more economically.
