Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and work from detailed engineering blueprints, assembly drawings, work orders, and technical specifications to determine the correct location and installation sequence for fasteners.
  • Accurately locate, drill, ream, and countersink holes in various materials, including aluminum, steel, and composites, ensuring precise dimensions and tolerances.
  • Select and utilize the appropriate fasteners (e.g., solid rivets, blind rivets, Hi-Loks, CherryMax, lockbolts, threaded fasteners) according to engineering requirements.
  • Operate a diverse range of pneumatic, hydraulic, and hand tools, such as rivet guns, bucking bars, drills, grinders, and torque wrenches, with a high degree of proficiency.
  • Perform the installation of solid shank rivets by driving and bucking, ensuring a perfectly formed shop head without causing damage to the surrounding structure.
  • Install blind fasteners in areas with limited access, using specialized tooling and techniques to guarantee proper seating and locking.
  • Apply and install Hi-Lok and other interference-fit fasteners, verifying proper grip length, collar installation, and breakaway torque.
  • Apply aircraft-grade sealants to faying surfaces, fasteners, and joints as specified to provide corrosion protection and environmental sealing.
  • Perform visual and dimensional inspections of all work performed to ensure compliance with quality standards, including checking for gaps, flushness, and fastener integrity.
  • Use precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and depth gauges to verify hole dimensions and fastener installation conformity.
  • Identify and correctly document non-conforming parts or installations, and collaborate with quality control and engineering teams to resolve issues.
  • Maintain accountability for and proper care of all assigned tools, jigs, and equipment, performing routine checks and reporting any malfunctions.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols, procedures, and policies, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Assemble and sub-assemble structural components, ensuring proper fit, alignment, and functionality before and after fastener installation.
  • Manage workflow to meet production schedules and deadlines while consistently maintaining high-quality workmanship.
  • Perform disassembly and removal of incorrectly installed or damaged fasteners using approved methods that prevent harm to the parent material.
  • Maintain detailed records of work performed, including completing production logs, traceability documentation, and quality sign-offs.
  • Set up and calibrate tools and equipment according to technical documentation to ensure they operate within specified parameters.
  • Handle and transport delicate parts and assemblies with care to prevent damage, dents, or scratches throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback on processes, tooling, and workflow to enhance efficiency and quality.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S/6S principles to promote efficiency and prevent accidents.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of new or junior-level assemblers and installers on proper techniques and procedures.
  • Support inventory management by tracking the usage of fasteners, sealants, and other consumables and reporting low stock levels.
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance on hand tools and equipment to ensure they remain in good working order.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex engineering drawings and technical documents.
  • Tool Proficiency: Expert handling of pneumatic rivet guns, bucking bars, drill motors, reamers, and specialized fastener installation tools.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using calipers, micrometers, scales, and gauges to verify dimensions and tolerances.
  • Fastener Identification: Strong knowledge of various fastener types, materials, and grip lengths (e.g., AN/MS/NAS hardware).
  • Sealant Application: Experience with the proper mixing, handling, and application of aerospace and industrial-grade sealants.
  • Hole Preparation: Proficient in drilling, reaming, deburring, and countersinking to exact specifications in multiple materials.
  • Quality Inspection: Ability to perform self-inspection and identify defects such as improper rivet formation, tool marks, or sealant voids.
  • Torque Application: Knowledge of and ability to apply correct torque values using calibrated torque wrenches.
  • Material Handling: Understanding of how to handle and work with various metals and composites without causing damage.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Ability to use company systems for logging work, accessing work orders, and completing training.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or diploma from a vocational or technical school in Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT), Airframe Mechanics, or a related manufacturing field.

Experience Requirements
