Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform precision torqueing and tensioning of critical bolted connections on industrial equipment, such as wind turbines, pressure vessels, and structural steel, using hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic tooling.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine fastener requirements, torque values, preload calculations, and assembly sequences.
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate a wide range of specialized bolting equipment, including hydraulic torque wrenches, bolt tensioners, pneumatic multipliers, and stud runners.
  • Conduct thorough pre-and post-job inspections of fasteners, threads, and joint surfaces to identify defects, corrosion, or damage that could compromise joint integrity.
  • Utilize ultrasonic measurement devices to accurately verify bolt stretch, load, and elongation, ensuring compliance with strict engineering and quality standards.
  • Execute fastener removal procedures, including nut splitting and stud extraction, for maintenance, repair, or replacement of components.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate documentation of all bolting activities, including recording torque values, tensioning pressures, tool calibration data, and job completion reports.
  • Champion a safety-first culture by performing comprehensive Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments before commencing any work.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and client-specific safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), confined space entry, and working-at-heights procedures.
  • Perform regular function checks, maintenance, and minor repairs on all torqueing, tensioning, and associated hydraulic power-pack equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Identify and select the correct type, grade, and size of fasteners, gaskets, and lubricants for specific applications based on technical manuals and project requirements.
  • Assemble and disassemble complex mechanical components and flanged joints in a controlled and systematic manner to prevent misalignment or damage.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common bolting issues in the field, such as galling, thread damage, or incorrect preload, and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and quality control personnel to ensure all work is performed to project specifications and industry standards (e.g., ASME, API).
  • Operate overhead cranes, hoists, and other lifting equipment to safely maneuver heavy components into position for assembly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, both in the workshop and at remote field locations.
  • Provide clear and concise status updates to supervisors regarding job progress, equipment issues, and any potential delays.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a larger maintenance or construction crew, often in adverse weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
  • Participate in ongoing safety training and technical certification programs to stay current with the latest industry best practices and technologies.
  • Manage and maintain the inventory of fasteners, spare parts, and consumables required for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance tasks.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc maintenance requests and assist other trades on-site as required.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for bolting and assembly tasks.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentice-level technicians on proper tool usage and safety protocols.
  • Participate in sprint planning and daily toolbox talks to align on project goals and safety topics.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Hydraulic Torque & Tensioning: Proficient in the setup, operation, and maintenance of hydraulic torque wrenches and multi-stud tensioning (MST) equipment.
  • Blueprint & Schematic Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and technical specifications to understand assembly requirements.
  • Precision Measurement: Skilled in using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and ultrasonic bolt load verification equipment.
  • Tool Calibration & Maintenance: Knowledge of calibration requirements and ability to perform basic maintenance on pneumatic and hydraulic bolting tools.
