Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Precisely measure, lay out, and stake fence lines according to blueprints, property surveys, and project specifications to ensure accurate placement.
  • Operate light and heavy construction equipment, including powered augers, skid steers, and trenchers, to efficiently excavate post holes to the required depth and diameter.
  • Securely set fence posts in concrete, gravel, or soil, ensuring they are perfectly plumb, level, and at the correct height and spacing for maximum structural integrity.
  • Assemble and install a wide variety of fencing systems, including wood, vinyl (PVC), chain-link, aluminum, and composite materials, following manufacturer guidelines and industry best practices.
  • Perform skilled carpentry and fabrication tasks, such as cutting, shaping, and joining rails, pickets, and panels to create custom fence sections and accommodate specific site conditions.
  • Install, align, and test the functionality of various types of gates, including swing, slide, and cantilever gates, along with their associated hardware like hinges, latches, and automated openers.
  • Execute on-site fence repairs, which may involve diagnosing issues, replacing damaged posts or panels, and restoring the fence's structural integrity and appearance.
  • Safely load, unload, and transport heavy fencing materials, tools, and equipment to and from the job site, ensuring proper securing of the load.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site at all times, including the systematic removal and disposal of soil, debris, and old fencing materials.
  • Interface professionally and courteously with clients on-site to confirm project details, provide progress updates, and conduct a final walk-through to ensure complete customer satisfaction.
  • Read and interpret work orders, site plans, and technical drawings to ensure the accurate execution of the fencing project from start to finish.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety protocols, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the safe operation of all tools and machinery.
  • Utilize a comprehensive range of hand and power tools—such as circular saws, drills, levels, post-hole diggers, and pneumatic tools—with high proficiency and a focus on safety.
  • Accurately prepare and mix concrete to the correct consistency for setting posts, ensuring a strong and durable foundation for the entire fence structure.
  • Skillfully stretch and attach chain-link fabric, ensuring it has the proper tension and is secured to posts and rails using ties and tension bars for a professional finish.
  • Perform basic welding and metal fabrication tasks as required for custom metal fence and gate projects or for making on-the-fly repairs and adjustments.
  • Inspect the quality of all materials prior to installation to identify, report, and quarantine any defects or inconsistencies that could compromise the project.
  • Collaborate effectively with a crew of other installers and laborers, communicating clearly to complete projects efficiently and to a high standard of quality.
  • Perform routine maintenance, inspection, and cleaning of company tools, equipment, and vehicles to ensure they remain in safe and optimal working order.
  • Work effectively and safely outdoors in a variety of challenging weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain, while maintaining high productivity.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve unforeseen on-site installation challenges, such as unexpected terrain, underground utilities, or design discrepancies, with minimal supervision.
  • Document daily work progress, materials utilized, and any on-site changes or incidents for accurate project tracking, inventory management, and billing purposes.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the hands-on training of new laborers or apprentice installers on basic techniques, material handling, and critical safety procedures.
  • Contribute to inventory management by tracking materials used on-site and reporting supply needs back to the warehouse or project manager.
  • Provide constructive feedback to the sales and design team regarding the feasibility of proposed fence layouts based on real-world site conditions.
  • Actively participate in daily safety briefings and contribute to fostering a culture of safety awareness and responsibility across the entire team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with Power & Hand Tools: Expert-level use of circular saws, drills, impact drivers, levels, grinders, and other common construction tools.
  • Fencing Systems Knowledge: Demonstrated experience installing wood, vinyl/PVC, chain-link, and aluminum/ornamental steel fencing.
  • Blueprint & Plan Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and execute work based on technical drawings, site plans, and work orders.
  • Equipment Operation: Competency in operating equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, and powered augers.
  • Basic Carpentry: Skills in cutting, measuring, and joining wood components with precision.
  • Concrete Mixing: Knowledge of proper ratios and techniques for mixing and pouring concrete for post setting.
  • Valid Driver's License: A valid license and a clean driving record are essential for operating company vehicles.
