Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Execute the end-to-end installation of diverse fencing systems, including wood privacy, vinyl, chain-link, and ornamental aluminum/steel, strictly adhering to project blueprints and industry best practices.
- Operate manual and powered post-hole diggers (augurs) to excavate holes to precise depths and diameters as required by fence type, soil conditions, and local code.
- Accurately set fence posts, ensuring they are plumb, level, and correctly spaced, before expertly mixing and pouring concrete to create a solid and durable foundation.
- Precisely measure, cut, and fasten fence rails, pickets, and panels between posts, ensuring consistent spacing and a professional, high-quality aesthetic.
- Perform detailed installation of various gate types, including walk-through and drive-through gates, fitting and adjusting hinges, latches, and other hardware for smooth and secure operation.
- Diagnose issues and perform comprehensive repairs on damaged or weathered fences, which includes replacing broken posts, rails, and pickets to restore structural integrity and appearance.
- Interpret detailed work orders, site plans, and blueprints to understand project scope, material requirements, and specific layout instructions for each unique job site.
- Safely and efficiently load and unload heavy fencing materials, tools, and equipment onto company vehicles, ensuring proper securing for transport to and from the job site.
- Proactively maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site at all times, adhering to all company and OSHA safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Skillfully operate a wide range of power tools, such as circular saws, miter saws, drills, impact drivers, and grinders, to cut and shape fencing materials with precision.
- Perform precise site measurements and layout of fence lines using string lines, transit levels, stakes, and measuring tapes to ensure accurate placement according to the project plan.
- Conduct thorough site preparation, including clearing of light vegetation, identifying property lines, and coordinating with utility locating services to prevent damage during excavation.
- Collaborate effectively with a crew of installers, communicating clearly and assisting teammates to ensure project goals are met efficiently, safely, and on schedule.
- Conduct final quality control inspections on all completed installations to verify that all components are secure, the fence is level and plumb, and the finished product meets the company's high-quality standards.
- Identify and resolve unforeseen on-site challenges, such as difficult terrain, rocky soil conditions, or unexpected obstacles, by applying practical problem-solving skills.
- Carefully dismantle and remove old or existing fencing structures from the property, and dispose of the materials in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
- Communicate professionally and courteously with clients on-site to provide project updates, review progress, and address any questions or concerns to ensure total customer satisfaction.
- Install, test, and troubleshoot automated gate operators and access control systems for residential and commercial applications.
- Ensure all fence installations comply with local and municipal building codes, permit requirements, and property line regulations.
- Stretch and install chain-link fabric, ensuring proper tension and securing it to the frame with ties and tension bars for a taut, secure finish.
Secondary Functions
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of all hand tools, power tools, and company vehicles to ensure they are in safe and optimal working condition.
- Assist with inventory management by tracking materials used on job sites and reporting shortages to the supervisor.
- Accurately complete daily paperwork, including job logs, timesheets, and material usage reports, to ensure proper project tracking and record-keeping.
- Provide on-the-job guidance and training to new or less experienced crew members to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency in installing various fence types (Wood, Vinyl, Chain-Link, Aluminum).
- Expert operation of power tools including miter saws, circular saws, drills, and grinders.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work orders.
- Precise site layout, grading, and measurement skills.
- Experience with manual and gas-powered augers for digging post holes.
