Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and navigate the ferry vessel on assigned routes, executing scheduled crossings while maintaining accurate position, speed, and heading using radar, GPS, and visual references to ensure on-time service and safe separation from other traffic.

  • Perform and oversee routine preventive maintenance tasks such as engine room checks, battery and electrical system inspections, lubrication of mechanical systems, and small repairs to maintain vessel readiness between scheduled dock maintenance.
  • Enforce passenger safety rules and ferry policies, manage passenger behavior diplomatically, and escalate security incidents or breaches of conduct to shore-side management according to company policies.
  • Supervise and mentor junior crew members and deckhands, delegating deck operations, safety checks, and customer service tasks while ensuring all crew adhere to safe working practices and regulatory standards.
  • Implement and maintain the shipboard safety management system, participating in audits, submitting corrective action requests, and assisting in continuous improvement of onboard safety culture.
  • Manage routine fueling and bunkering operations with strict adherence to fuel handling procedures, spill prevention protocols, and accurate record-keeping to minimize environmental and safety risks.
  • Facilitate efficient vehicle loading/unloading operations by coordinating with terminal operators, guiding drivers, and using signaling and engine control to maintain smooth flow and turnaround times.
  • Respond to passenger medical incidents, providing first aid and coordinating transfer to shore-based emergency services when required, maintaining composure and following established medical response protocols.
  • Conduct navigational watchkeeping duties during assigned periods, maintaining situational awareness, plotting positions, and adjusting navigation plans to reflect dynamic traffic, hazards, and operational constraints.
  • Ensure compliance with local, national, and international regulations, including documentation of certificates and crew endorsements, customs/immigration procedures when applicable, and adherence to environmental regulations (MARPOL/local discharge rules).
  • Participate in terminal operations planning and ferry scheduling meetings, providing operational feedback, capacity estimates, and suggestions for route optimization to improve on-time performance and passenger throughput.
  • Lead boarding safety briefings and provide clear, professional customer service announcements regarding route information, safety procedures, and expected arrival/departure times to enhance passenger experience.
  • Investigate and document operational incidents and near-misses, collaborate with safety officers to develop root-cause analyses, and implement preventive measures to reduce recurring risks.
  • Coordinate with maintenance teams and vendors for planned drydock, haul-out, or heavy maintenance activities, preparing technical details, checklists, and operational constraints to minimize service disruption.
  • Assist with cargo and vehicle manifests reconciliation and ensure hazardous materials (if permitted) are declared, segregated, and managed according to legal and company policies to protect vessel, crew, and passengers.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
